Gifting a teen is always a challenge
By Metro News
Giving gifts during the
holiday season may be re
warding, but certain people
on your shopping list may
leave you scratching your
head wondering what to buy.
Teenagers often fall into that
confusing category. As trends
and interests change at a mo
ment’s notice, adults may not
know what to get the
teenagers on their list. These
suggestions can set you on
the right course.
Gadgets
Teens like staying abreast
of the latest technology, and
what better way to do so than
with hot-off-the-assembly-
line products? Modems teens
use multiple mobile devices
— from tablets to smart
phones to notebook comput
ers — so an outlet multiplier
with surge protection could
be the way to go. A charging
caddy that keeps all of their
devices organized and within
reach while replenishing the
batteries can make for an
other go-to gift.
While shopping for gadg
ets, think about investing in
Bluetooth-enabled earbuds or
over-the-ear headphones.
This way teens can enjoy
their favorite streaming
music stations or binge Net-
flix series without disturbing
others.
Gym equipment
Adolescents are conscious
of their personal health and
body image. To foster posi
tive experiences, gift givers
can encourage healthy phys
try these tips
ical activity. A gym member
ship or personal fitness
equipment can help teens get
on track with a weekly regi
men.
Luggage / travel gear
A thirst for exploration
may inspire teens to travel
the country or the world. A
high-quality piece of luggage
can be a building block for
teens’ travel gear. Other
travel items to consider are
RFID blocker ID and credit
card holders, money toward a
passport or an overnight toi
letries bag.
Gaming
Many teens immerse
themselves in gameplay,
whether solo or online multi
player. Games can be en
joyed while using various
consoles, computers and
even smartphones. Find out
which platform teens are
using and then purchase gift
cards, points or e-codes so
that they can get new games
or enjoy in-app purchases
and upgrades.
School funding
Some gifts can focus on
the future, including teens’
education. Consider donating
to or opening up an account
to help fund college costs.
Different plans have different
annual contribution limits
and tax deferments, so it’s a
good idea to speak with a fi
nancial professional to figure
out which avenue is right for
you and your gift recipient.
Retailer gift cards
Teenagers always enjoy
some extra purchasing
power, so gift cards to their
favorite retailers are likely to
be a hit. If you’re not sure
where the teen on your list
shops, consider a gift card
good for any store in a local
mall.

Researchers find gratitude makes for resilient marriages
photo/UGA
Ted Futris provides healthy relationship skills and fi
nancial guidance for adults and youth.
By Aaron Hale
CAES News
For resilient marriages,
thanks is best given year-
round, not just at the holi
days. That’s according to
University of Georgia re
searchers at the College of
Family and Consumer Sci
ences.
“We found that feeling ap
preciated and believing that
your spouse values you di
rectly influences how you
feel about your marriage,
how committed you are to it,
and your belief that it will
last,” said study coauthor Ted
Futris, a professor in the Col
lege of Family and Consumer
Sciences and a family life
specialist.
The 2015 study found that
feelings of gratitude boosted
marital satisfaction, commit
ment and stability, especially
during difficult times. In the
study, couples who had mis
matched and counterproduc
tive styles of conflict — the
kind where one spouse brings
up every harm done, while
the other goes quiet and with
draws — could withstand
that dysfunction with some
thing called “perceived grat
itude.”
“As long as they felt ap
preciated by their spouse,
they weren’t thinking about
divorce as much," said lead
author Allen Barton, who
earned his doctoral degree in
human development and
family sciences at UGA in
2013 and is now an assistant
professor at the University of
Illinois. “It goes to show the
power of ‘thank you.’”
Here’s how implementing
gratitude into marriage could
work:
Figure out what to be grate
ful for
If you’re thinking more
about what you wish your
spouse had done rather than
appreciating what they actu
ally do, it might be because
you’re not seeing what your
spouse is putting into — or at
least is trying to put into —
the relationship. After all,
people tend to be more aware
of the work they put in than
what others are doing.
“Start with the recognition
that we’re all prone to be a
little more self-centered than
we might realize,” Barton
said. “You have to be aware
of it. We’re not as fair and
objective as we’d like to
think.”
So, acknowledge that your
spouse might have been mak
ing an effort in ways you
don’t see.
How to start the conversa
tion
If you’re not sure whether
your spouse feels appreci
ated, you could try asking.
“Start by telling them the
reason,” Barton said. “‘I want
you to feel valued in this re
lationship’ and then simply
ask ‘Is there any area in our
relationship where you feel
unappreciated?”’
If so, ask how you can
change that.
But be careful of when
you’re asking the question.
It’s best to avoid this conver
sation when you’re putting
your kids to bed or in a pe
riod of conflict.
Many ways to say thank
you
When it comes to express
ing gratitude, you could just
say thank you. But there are
other options that might be
more meaningful to your
spouse — gifts, cards, or
even just a midday text mes
sage.
Of course, expressing
gratitude is only one compo
nent of a healthy marriage.
And what is a problem for
one marriage may never
come up in another. The real
measure of resilient mar
riages, Futris said, is how
couples interact day after day.
"All couples have dis
agreements and argue. And,
when couples are stressed,
they are likely to have more
arguments," he said. "What
distinguishes the marriages
that last from those that don’t
is not how often they argue,
but how they argue and how
they treat each other on a
daily basis."
