To the Editor:
It is not the coronavirus
that is causing us to feel de
pressed and hostile. It is the
incessant and redundant po
litical ads that we are being
bombarded with on TV. I'm
Nancy Rogers and I approve
this message.
Nancy Rogers
To the Editor:
It doesn’t matter to me
that real American candidates
like Perdue and Loeffler have
financial problems. It’s better
to express concern for the re
cent election vote counting
by not wasting my time and
vote to take part in a ques
tionable election that Democ
rats can steal.
I can save my important
vote for 2024 instead.
Joey Melles
To the Editor:
The presidential election
is now over. The people have
spoken. Now it is time to
move forward and accom
plish things that will posi
tively impact the lives of
Americans. We can:
1) Become part of the so
lution to the COVID-19;
wear a mask; take the vac
cine; be socially responsible
for yourself and others. Lives
do depend on it.
2) Vote. We have choices.
I, personally, have little in
common with multi-million
aires and feel they do not care
very much about “regular”
Americans. I will vote for
two people who have the
courage to show compassion
for their fellow citizens and
who want to be public ser
vants rather than recipients of
more wealth and privilege.
3) Come together as
neighbors and friends, espe
cially with those who may
have differing views than
yours. There are many things
on which we can agree. Iden
tify them, join hands to help
others in need, and there are
many. Through giving, we
become better people.
Division is our enemy.
Our current president has cre
ated more division and dis
trust between groups of
Americans. Who does this
benefit? Our adversaries
abroad are smiling as we
fight among ourselves. They
have planted seeds of doubt
in our election’s credibility.
Do not buy into this attempt
to weaken America.
The American people
have spoken and let us move
our country forward. To
gether, let us focus on the
challenges ahead: defeating a
deadly disease, rebuilding
our economy, and recreating
the trust in our leaders as they
attack the issues of the day.
Brian Roberts
To the Editor:
We have now reached the
time, for all Pickens County
conservative voters to do
your civic duty and vote for
the future of Georgia and
America. We must show up
the rest of this week and next
Tuesday to vote for Sen(s).
David Purdue, Kelly Loef
fler, and Public Service Com
mission Mr. Lauren
McDonald.
Do not listen to the
naysayers that your vote will
not count this time. We have
to show up this time regard
less of what you did last
month. We need to have faith
in the Pickens County elec
tion process. We have to
prove to ourselves the elec
tion system works by exceed
ing the November local
results.
We cannot let the leftist,
liberal agenda move forward
if the socialist democrats
control the Senate. With the
eminent “stolen” election of
Biden/Harris, it will be
Obama 2.0. The Senate will
be our “Alamo.” We must
maintain the balance of
power by a Republican held
Senate.
Elections have conse
quences. Go out and vote!
Respectfully,
Jay Johnson

A two-vehicle crash
Monday, December 28th on
Highway 53 East sent one
child to Children’s Health
care of Atlanta with serious
injuries, according to the
Georgia State Patrol. A sec
ond child was also in one of
the vehicles but there was
no further information on
injuries available by press
time.
A box truck involved in
the crash clipped the comer
of Quick Burger restaurant
in Tate.
Few details were avail
able about the crash at press
time, but GSP stated the box
truck failed to maintain its
lane and struck a pickup
truck the afternoon of Dec.
28 near the Quick Burger
restaurant.
No names were released
as the report had not been
finalized.

plead guilty in
$ 1,2B tax scheme

ATLANTA - Two Georgia
men have pleaded guilty for
taking part in a wide-ranging
tax scheme involving the sale
of fraudulent syndicated con
servation easement (SCE)
tax shelters.
According to federal court
documents, Stein Agee of
Canton and Corey Agee of
Atlanta, partners at a Sandy
Springs accounting firm,
promoted fraudulent tax
shelters between at least
2013 and the end of last year
designed to generate deduc
tions for high-income tax
payers through partnerships
purported to be making real
estate investments.
In reality, the partnerships
were a sham, lacking eco
nomic substance and serving
no legitimate business pur
pose.
The placement of conser
vation easements over the
real estate was a foregone
conclusion, which enabled
the investors to fraudulently
shelter their income from the
IRS with no economic risk
and to claim substantial tax
deductions to which they
were not entitled.
The Agees and their co
conspirators promised in
vestors that for every $1
invested in the partnership,
the investor would receive
more than $4 in charitable
tax deductions.
“The defendants’ and
their co-conspirators' crimi
nal conduct enabled their
clients to claim more than
$1.2 billion in fraudulent tax
deductions and generated
hundreds of millions of dol
lars of tax loss to the United
States,” said Richard E.

Quick Burger stated in a

Zuckerman, principal deputy
assistant attorney general in
the Justice Department's Tax
Division.
“Taxpayers engaging in
such schemes, and the
lawyers, accountants, ap
praisers and other profes
sionals that enable them,
should understand that they
will be held fully to account
for their fraudulent conduct.”
“Each year, millions of
law-abiding Americans
painstakingly file accurate
tax returns and pay timely
their tax obligations,” added
U.S. Attorney R. Andrew
Murray for the Western Dis
trict of North Carolina. “As
the defendants admitted in
court ... their tax shelter
scheme helped wealthy
clients skirt their tax respon
sibilities and avoid paying
their fair share.”
When legitimately cre
ated and used in compliance
with the Internal Revenue
Code, conservation ease
ments can both protect the
environment and provide tax
incentives. Abusive SCEs are
designed to game the system
and generate inflated and un
warranted tax deductions.
The Agees both pleaded
guilty to one count of con
spiracy to defraud the IRS,
which carries a maximum
penalty of five years in
prison. They also face a pe
riod of supervised release,
restitution, and monetary
penalties.

Homeowner Safety
Winter Tips Part
Part 1 of 3
• Place an insulating dome on outdoor faucets to re
duce the likelihood of your pipes freezing.
• Check for air leaks around windows and doors using
a lit incense stick. If the smoke is sucked out, seal the
leak with products available at home supply stores.
• If you are going out of town and reports indicate a win
ter storm is likely, turn off the water to your home and
open all of the taps to drain the water system.
• Do not use a generator inside your house. Gas-pow
ered generators must be outside or in well ventilated
areas.
• Consider purchasing and installing a standby home
generator with an automatic “on" switch.
• With winter comes increased rainfall, so you want to
clean out gutters, which can be a tough job so it may
be best to call a professional.
• Make sure to remove built-up lint from the dryer in
order to reduce the fire risk and improve your house
hold energy efficiency.
