The Dragons basketball
team had a full schedule last
week as they took on two re

In the first game of the
week, the Dragons traveled

by a basket.
In the third quarter, the
Dragons came alive. Pickens

over the lead by three points.
The scoring continued for the
Dragons as they cruised to a
65-54 region win.
Tucker Lowe was the high

In the following contest,
the Dragons traveled across
the state to take on the Cedar-

frame, both teams struggled
to find the net, but Pickens
jumped out to a nine to seven
lead. In the second quarter
the Bulldogs battled back and
took a 18-16 lead into the
half.
The Dragons once again
came charging out of the
locker room in the third quar

20-6. From that point on, the
Dragons never looked back.

Nettes make nine in a row
The Nettes returned to re
gion play last week with two
road trips.
First up were the Lady
Raiders of SE and the Nettes
brought their defense with
them for this one. After two
quarters of play, the Nettes
headed to the locker room
with a 32-6 lead and the
game seemingly in hand.
They added another 27 points
in the second half and cruised
to a 59-25 win. Coach Bran
don Thomas noted some
missed opportunities on of
fense and it was confirmed as
the Nettes shot only 28 per
cent from the field. However,
they only committed nine
turnovers on the evening and
forced SE Whitfield into 23
of their own.
Isabella Howell led the
Nettes with 12 points, aided
by Amanda Nelson’s 9, and

Seven
With the Alabama’s
thorough 52-24 thrashing
of Ohio State, head coach
Nick Saban claimed his
seventh National Champi
onship which moves him
ahead of Paul “Bear”
Bryant as the most by any
football coach in history.
Perhaps you began fol
lowing his career when
Saban coached at Michi
gan State where his Spar
tans upset number one
Ohio State in 1998 but
likely, few people noticed
him as a head coach until
his LSU Tigers won the
SEC West in 2001 and
claimed his first national
title in 2003. It could be
that many people payed
little attention to this guy
from Monongah, West
Virginia until the Univer
sity of Alabama lured him
away from the Miami
Dolphins in January of
2007.
Since Saban became
the head coach of the
Crimson Tide, he has
rewritten the record books
with the bull of his suc
cess coming after age 50.
When he turned 50 years
old, the former high
school quarterback and
college defensive back
had bounced around as a
college coach and defen
sive coordinator in the
NFL. He was considered a
solid coach but not spec
tacular. During the past
two decades, he became
legendary, iconic and
revered as not just the best
coach of his generation
but the best coach of all
time.
Watching his team play
football is the sports
equivalent of seeing Van
Gogh paint and Mozart
compose.
At Alabama, Saban
won National Champi
onships in 2009, 2011,
2012, 2015, 2017 and
2020, so what’s next for
the 69-year-old with an
unmatched attention to
detail?
My quick answer is
more of the same.
By all accounts, he re
mains as sharp mentally
and physically as ever and
his drive has not faded.
With his quarterback,
top running back, Heis-
man Trophy winning re
ceiver and a host of other
players heading to the
NFL, Bama remains
loaded with young talent
including the top rated re
cruiting class in the coun
try for 2021, so Saban’s
team should remain a na
tional contender for at
least the next half decade.
I would not be sur
prised if his championship
total continues to grow
from seven to eight, nine
or 10.
