Homeowner Safety
Winter Tips Part3of3
• Inspect air vents, faucets and plumbing fixtures. Anything at
tached to exterior walls should be inspected for leaks. Such in
spections might need to be conducted from outside the home,
which can make it more difficult to detect if cold air is entering
the home. Look for gaps in the insulation around these areas,
filling in those gaps as necessary.
• Keep anything that can burn away from heating equipment, in
cluding portable space heaters.
• All major appliances should be plugged directly into a wall re
ceptacle outlet. Only one heat-producing appliance should be
plugged into a receptacle outlet at any given time. Never use
extension cords or multi-outlet converters for appliances.
• Inspect bathrooms for mold growth. Mold can grow on sur
faces that are routinely wet, and that makes poorly ventilated
bathrooms common sources for home mold infestations.
• Inspect and address any sources of carbon monoxide. Carbon
monoxide, or CO, is an invisible, odorless gas that can con
tribute to poor indoor air quality and a host of health problems if
it goes undetected in a home. Potential sources of CO in a home
include improperly vented natural gas appliances, such as
stoves and water heaters, gas-powered tools that are used in
doors, clogged chimneys, or blocked heating exhaust vents.
Men and women can periodically inspect potential sources of
CO and address any issues they find while also making sure all
CO detectors are properly installed and functioning optimally.
• Fireplaces can keep a home's inhabitants warm, but only when
they're in use. When the fireplace is not being used, close the
flue to prevent heat from escaping the house.
