Pastor to address
immigration at Mt.
Light Sunday
The congregation of
Mountain Light Unitarian
Universalist Church believes
that it is our moral obligation
to protect public health and
the most vulnerable in our
beloved community; there
fore, we have postponed
large gatherings until we feel
that the threats of the pan
demic have passed. In the in
terim, we will be live
streaming our Sunday Serv
ices. For information about
our services and our 7 Princi
ples, please visit mluuc.org.
On Sunday, JAN 24, we
welcome Pastor David-
Michael Searcy as our guest
minister. His message will
be "May the Immigrant Chil
dren of Lady Liberty Be
Peaceful".
First, if you are not fully
Native American and of the
first people of this land, then
you are an immigrant.
Our harbors opened their
doors to the young searching
foreigners, and it was a time
when strangers were wel
come here. People came
from everywhere with hopes
and their hearts set on mira
cles as they spoke of a mysti
cal, magical land called
America.

Minister’s

In a Changing World
Jesus Is the Same
By Rev. Tony Elder
I’ll admit that I’m not
always quick to embrace
change, even when I know
it may be necessary.
For example, whoever
the new permanent host of
Jeopardy ends up being, it
just won’t be the same
without Alex Trebek.

Hey, I felt the same way
when Bob Barker left The
Price Is Right.
However, there are even
more significant changes
going on in our world. In
addition to all the adjust
ments we’ve had to make
because of the pandemic,
we’re about to experience
having a new President, a
different balance of power
in Congress, and new poli
cies which will inevitably
affect all of our lives to
some degree. Our whole
society is evolving (or de
generating, depending on
how you evaluate those
changes) into something
almost unrecognizable and
unimaginable for some of
us who have been around a
while. Change can be hard
to swallow, whether it’s for
the better or for the worse.
So when we’re facing
times like these when we
have no choice but to turn
a comer and face some
thing new or different, it’s
comforting still to be able
to keep our feet planted on
something stable and un
changing. For those of us
who are trusting Jesus as
our Savior, we have such a
sure and firm place to
stand. The Bible assures us
that our faith rests on
Someone who hasn’t
changed and won’t change,
no matter what else in this
world gets revised, can
celled, or fades away and
regardless of whomever
may retire or die.
God declares, “For I am
the Lord, I do not change”
(Malachi 3:6). His Word
also assures us that we
have a Heavenly Father
“with whom there is no
variation or shadow of
turning” (James 1:17). And
maybe the clearest and
most comforting statement
of all is this: “Jesus Christ

Christians believe that we are saved by Jesus'
suffering and death on the cross, in essence that
he suffered and died for our sins. We consider
Jesus' suffering to be sacred, as it is part and
parcel of humanity's redemption. Jesus showed us
that suffering can be sacred. That is not a cure or
remedy for suffering, but a way to at least make it
meaningful. It is sometimes said that human
beings can live without anything except hope. We
might also say that we can suffer anything as long
as there is some meaning or purpose in it. As the
philosopher Nietzsche put it, "He who has a why to
live for can bear with almost any how." Nothing is
worse than severe and interminable suffering that
has no meaning. That might almost serve as a
definition of Hell: severe and endless suffering that
has no meaning. Imagine having the realization at
the gates of Hell that we could have had salvation,
but instead we chose selfishness, momentary
pleasures and sin and now we are going to pay for
it. That bargain, to sell one's soul for momentary
pleasure or selfish gain, will undoubtedly appear
meaningless in the grand scheme of things.
Infinitely better to delay gratification and suffer
meaningfully now than risk eternal meaningless
suffering in the hereafter.
- Christopher Simon
For it is better, if it is
God's will, to suffer for
doing good than for
doing evil. For Christ
also suffered once for
sins, the righteous for
the unrighteous, to bring
you to God.
