THURSDAY. JANUARY 21.2021 PICKENS COUNTY PROGRESS PAGE 7A
To the Editor:
I protest the false, wrong
ful impeachment of President
Trump.
The U. S. House of Rep
resentatives accuses Presi
dent Trump of three "high
crimes" for which the House
provided no evidence.
First, the House accused
President Trump of falsely
asserting that the presidential
election results "were the
product of widespread
fraud."
This is not a crime. Presi
dent Trump has the legal
right to state his views re
garding election fraud. There
are many indicators of such
fraud.
For four years, the De
mocrats claimed election
fraud by President Trump in
the 2016 election. Nobody
arrested the Democrats for
doing the same as President
Trump.
Secondly, the House ac
cuses President Trump of in
citing lawlessness at his
January 6 rally resulting in
his supporters at the rally at
tacking the U. S. Capitol
Building.
The Impeachment Article
uses President Tramp's Janu
ary 6 "fight like hell to save
the country" statement as its
sole piece of evidence for this
accusation.
By use of the word
"fight," President Trump
means peaceful but aggres
sive political action such as
peaceful demonstrations and
getting out the vote. The
House's complete misunder
standing of President
Trump's statement nullifies
this second House accusa
tion.
President Trump has had
over 600 rallies over four
years. He never once incited
violence, and violence did
Letters to the Editor
not occur.
The attack on the Capitol
had been planned for weeks
by violent radical groups not
connected in any way to the
Trump organization.
If President Trump is re
sponsible for the Capitol at
tack, then Joe Biden is
responsible for the Radical
Left violent summer attacks
in several American cities
that killed 37 people.
Thirdly, the House ac
cuses President Trump of the
"high crime" of asking Mr.
Raffensperger, in a phone
conversation, to "find"
enough votes to overturn the
Georgia election, and threat
ening him if he did not com
ply.
There is no "high crime"
here. President Trump has
the legal right to discuss vot
ing procedures with state of
ficials.
By "find", Trump does not
mean to change legal Biden
votes to Tramp. He means to
"find" illegal Biden votes that
had not yet been identified.
And there is no evidence
that President Trump threat
ened Mr. Raffensperger.
This wrongful, false im
peachment is a blatant at
tempt by the Democrats to
damage President Trump in
the eyes of his 75 million
supporters so that they would
abandon support for Presi
dent Trump's future initia
tives to "Make America
Great Again."

To the Editor:
Open letter to Jerry Davis
and family at their BBQ
restaurant.
I’ve heard of people being
addicted to nicotine, alcohol,
drugs, gambling, and even
sex. But I’ve never heard of
anyone being addicted to
BBQ. But unfortunately I
am. And I’ve discovered that
I’m not alone In that addic
tion. I’ve driven by your
place to see if y’all were open
and other hungry folks were
doing the same; park out
front, go up to the window,
look inside, hoping to see
everything back to normal.
But nobody is in there and
Jerry, we are suffering. We
need some of those ribs, stew,
pinto beans, and Johnny
Cakes. Please have mercy on
our wretched souls and open
now. We promise to wear
those damn masks, wash our
hands, and social distance (I
wonder what genius thought
up that term).
Anyway, Jerry, I know
you are a rich man and don’t
need the money, but we need
the BBQ. Please help.
Signed,
Dan Darrington and hun
gry friends.

To the Editor,
Dear Board Members,
Call to action Unless
something unethical has been
done, as a taxpayer, I am call
ing on you to work with our
current superintendent.
I am asking that all our
elected officials please ask
themselves two qualifying
questions before voting on
anything:
1. Am I being a good
steward of the taxpayer
money?
2. Does this benefit our
community as a whole?
Approximately 70% of
my property taxes go to the
schools and I demand ac
countability. Politics need to
be set aside here. If you can't
work with your leadership
and coworkers, please step
down. We deserve better.

Trial in beauty queen murder moves forward
By Beau Evans
Staff Writer

The trial of a man accused
of murdering South Georgia
beauty queen Tara Grinstead
moved forward Tuesday as
Georgia Supreme Court jus
tices heard arguments for
why the state should pay for
his expert witnesses.

Court appeals over wit
ness funds have delayed for
nearly two years the trial of
Ryan Duke, who authorities
say confessed to breaking
into Grinstead’s home in
Ocilla in 2005 and strangling
her to death before hiding her
body in a pecan orchard.
Duke was set to stand trial
in April 2019 before attor
neys representing him pro
bono appealed an Irwin
County Superior Court
judge’s decision denying him
state funds for expert wit
nesses since he is indigent.
Grinstead, a high school
teacher and winner of a
South Georgia beauty pag
eant, was missing for more
than a decade before Duke
was arrested in connection
with her murder in 2017,
shortly after a friend helped
him bum Grinstead’s body in
a pine orchard then came
clean to investigators.
Duke faces a host of
felony charges murder, as
sault and burglary in connec
tion with Grinstead’s killing.
His friend, Bo Dukes, was
convicted of making false
statements, hindering an ar
rest and concealing a death,
and given a 25-year prison
sentence in 2019.
Attorneys who have rep
resented Duke for free since
August 2018 have argued he
should be entitled to state
funds for expert witnesses
under the state’s indigent-de
fense law, despite the fact he
is represented by private
lawyers instead of public de
fenders.
Justices gave little indica
tion which way they may rule
at a hearing on Duke’s mo
tion for expert-witness fund
ing. His case will be sent
back to the Irwin County
court following their ruling to
schedule a new date for trial.

Alcohol
consumption
According to the Centers
for Disease Control and Pre
vention, excessive alcohol
consumption is responsible
for one in 10 deaths among
working-age adults in the
United States.
The Dietary Guidelines
for Americans, which are
produced jointly every five
years by the Department of
Health and Human Services
and the Department of Agri
culture, advise adults about
healthy alcohol consumption.
According to the guidelines,
women should consume no
more than one drink per day
while men should limit their
consumption to two drinks
per day or less. Consuming
more alcohol than the guide
lines suggest can prove fatal,
as the CDC notes that binge
drinking is responsible for al
most half the deaths related
to excessive alcohol con
sumption.
