THURSDAY. FEBRUARY 4. 2021 PICKENS COUNTY PROGRESS PAGE 3A
Edward Richard Wendel-
burg (Dick), passed away
peacefully at his home on
Sunday, January 24, 2021.
He was bom to Margaret
Vera Miller Wendelburg and
Frederick Edward Wendel
burg on September 8, 1935 in
Washington, Pennsylvania.
The family moved to Mis
souri and Dick grew up in In
dependence. As a young boy
he had a paper route and
liked to boast that his claim
to fame was throwing the
paper for then-Senator Harry
Truman. Dick graduated
from Northeast High School
where he was president of the
student council, the debate
team and the Spanish club.
He loved the Boy Scouts and
earned the rank of Eagle
Scout. He graduated from
the University of Missouri in
1957 with a BS in business
management, and from But
ler University in Indianapolis
in 1962 with an MBA in eco
nomics. While at MU he was
president of his fraternity,
Delta Upsilon.
After graduating from
Missouri, he joined Eh Lilly
& Company in Indianapolis.
In addition to working and
studying for his master's, he
and a friend bought an ice
cream truck and spent week
ends selling ice cream to the
neighboring children, who
gathered when they heard the
merry jingle.
He then moved to Eli
Lilly's International division
and began a career that would
take him around the world.
On his first assignment to
Geneva, Switzerland, he met
his future wife, Margaret
Chaffey, who was visiting
Europe from Australia.
A short assignment to
London was followed by
Dick and Margaret's wedding
in Australia, and job transfer
to Hong Kong, where they
spent four years. From there,
Dick's job took them to
Manila, Philippines, where
their children were bom, then
Maracay, Venezuela, fol
lowed by five years in Mex
ico City and
then Indianapolis again,
where Dick served as Area
Director for Latin America
and Canada. His final assign
ment was in Atlanta. Then,
after 30 years with Eh Lilly,
Dick took early retirement to
follow his dream of becom
ing a financial planner. He
joined HD Vest and Com
pany as a representative and
ran his own successful busi
ness until a few years ago
when ill health forced him to
retire.
While in Atlanta, Dick
and the family were great
tennis fans. Dick loved Sun
day afternoons playing ALTA
mixed doubles, and often hi
jacked his son Kevin as a
fourth to play with the men
early on Saturday mornings.
Most vacations were spent at
the TBarM tennis ranch
in New Braunfels, Texas,
where he made lifelong
friends.
When Dick and Margaret
made the move to Big
Canoe in Jasper, Georgia,
Dick made the switch from
tennis to golf. He was an avid
member of The Commission
ers group, and despite his
considerable handicap, was
thrilled to score his second
hole-in-one on Cherokee #6.
Dick and Margaret have now
called Big Canoe home for
22 years.
Dick was a voracious
reader and loved all music,
from Classical to Country.
He was a wonderful story
teller, and only exaggerated
some of the time. He was an
animal lover, and always had
a dog by his side. All were
rescues, with Maggie being
the most recent. He enjoyed
spending time on the balcony
at his home, watching the
birds at the feeders, and
greeting friends as they
passed on the cart path be
hind the house. He was a reg
ular at the water aerobics
classes at the Big Canoe Fit
ness Center and was usually
the only man there! Most of
all, Dick loved his family.
Dick is survived by his
wife of 56 years, Margaret
Wendelburg; son, Kevin
Wendelburg and his wife,
Carrie, of Newnan; daugh
ter, Kristin Wendelburg
Boyer and her husband,
Chris, of Atlanta; his four
grandchildren, Margaret
Elise and Frederick Wendel
burg, and Hannah and Emily
Boyer. Also surviving are his
sister, Dana Wendelburg Sut
ton, her husband, John, and
their daughter, Claudia Green
of Independence, Missouri.
Because of COVID the fam
ily will hold a private memo
rial service. If you wish to
make a gift in Dick's mem
ory, please consider the Big
Canoe First Responders
