Rotarians distribute 15,125 more meals
with assistance from Amicalola EMC
By Jasper Rotary
The Rotary Club of Jasper
continues to serve area resi
dents with free USDA Farm
to Families in cooperation
with Amicalola EMC.
“We could not have done
over 50,000 total meals with
out the help of
President/CEO Todd Payne
and the staff at Amicalola
EMC,” said Rotary President
Max Caylor.
The Amicalola dock is
Rotary’s staging area for the
deliveries. Jasper gets 12 pal
lets and another 12 pallets
goes to their dock in Ellijay
for the Gilmer Rotary Club to
distribute. Payne said, “We
see helping distribute food as
another way we serve our
customers.”
The area non-profits
served with last week’s deliv
ery include: CARES, ACES,
Boys & Girls Club, the Burnt
Mountain Center, Timothy
House and Cowboy Church.
The Burnt Mountain Ex
ecutive Director Debbie
Rooker said, “These food
boxes help our clients be
cause sometimes their Social
Security checks runs low and
the extra food helps them
make it to the end of the
month.”
The food boxes weighed
33 pounds and contained
milk, meat, cheese and bags
of produce. Another delivery
is planned for February 23rd.
Jasper Rotary meets each
week at noon at Chatta
hoochee Tech or on Zoom.
They are a group of citizens
who enjoy fellowship and
serving their community.

Nineteen cases of a highly
contagious COVID-19 vari
ant originating from Europe
have been identified in metro
Atlanta, state public-health
officials confirmed on Mon
day.
Early studies suggest the
COVID-19 variant is “signif
icantly more contagious”
than the original coronavirus
strain that sparked a global
pandemic last March, accord
ing to the Georgia Depart
ment of Public Health
(DPH). Georgia is among 30
states reporting cases of the
variant so far.
The 19 variant cases in
Georgia have been reported
in several metro-Atlanta
counties including Fulton,
Gwinnett, DeKalb, Cobb,
Clayton, Cherokee, Carroll,

-19 variant up to 19 identified cases in Ga.
Douglas and Paulding. It has
infected Georgians from ages
15 to 61, DPH said in a news
release.
“We must ensure we are
taking every precaution right
now to prevent transmission
of COVID and to avoid a
surge in hospitalizations and
loss of life,” said state Public
Health Commissioner Dr.
Kathleen Toomey.
Toomey added the
COVID-19 variant now
spreading in Georgia will
likely become the “dominant
strain” of coronavirus in the
U.S. by March after originat
ing in the United Kingdom.
DPH officials are warning
Georgians to follow COVID-
19 safety measures even
more strictly since laborato
ries have only tested a small
number of samples for the
variant so far, giving public-
health experts a limited view
of where the variant might be
spreading.
Public-health officials are
urging Georgians to wear
masks, wash hands and social
distance to help curb the
highly contagious virus’
spread at a time when
COVID-19 positive case
rates and deaths have started
trending down after grueling
winter outbreaks.
The variant’s discovery in
Georgia also comes as state
officials, hospitals and phar
macies rush to distribute tight
supplies of COVID-19 vac
cines to health-care workers,
nursing-home residents and
staff, first responders and
people ages 65 and older.
Pharmaceutical compa
nies Pfizer and Modema
have stressed that their
COVID-19 vaccines “appear
to work” against the variant,
according to DPH.
Nearly 750,000 people
had tested positive for
COVID-19 in Georgia as of
Sunday afternoon, with
nearly 160,000 more reported
positive antigen tests indicat
ing likely positive results.
The virus has killed 12,570
Georgians.
Community Responds: More winter or early spring?
By Angela Reinhardt

Just a few days before
Groundhog Day we asked
our Facebook followers if
they wanted to see an early
spring or have more winter in
hopes of a big snow. Here are
some of the responses:
Stephanie Pickens
Williams - Hoping for early
spring. We have been at
home mostly for a year so. At
least when it warms up we
can get out of the house and
get out in nature again.
Judd Voyles - We’ve not
really had no winter just a
few cold days.
Mark Hess - The real
question is, will the ground
hog wear a face mask?
Jan Turner O'Kelley -
More winter. Would love to
see a 4-inch snowfall and a
few seriously cold days to
stem the bugs for summer.
Kathie Gilbert Keller -
In Georgia, groundhogs don't
hibernate.
Ken Berry - Never count
out snow until after March.
Jamie Swafford - Snow,
snow, snow...but if no snow
then bring on spring. I’m
good either way.
Courtney Gilstrap
More winter. I want to build
a snowman.
Erica Poole - Most defi
nitely a early spring.
