The Sassafras Literary
Exchange presented awards
to middle and high schoolers
who placed in three cate
gories - poetry, fiction, and

The event was held at
First Christian Church on
Refuge Road on Thursday,
Feb. 11.
Poet Clifford Brooks, who
has several books of poetry
published and who founded
The Southern Collective Ex
perience literary magazine,
was speaker for the evening.
Brooks recalled winning sev
eral Sassafras Youth Writing
awards and brought along the
plaques that were presented
to him by the decades-old
Sassafras club in the late 80s
and early 90s. Brooks told at
tendees those awards have al
ways been a reminder that
there was something he ex
celled at and was passionate
about.
William Young, president
of the Sassafras Literary Ex
change, later thanked several
people who contributed to
the success of another Youth
Writing Contest, which was
delayed this year with sched
uling problems caused by
COVID-19.
“First and foremost to
thank is the Community
Bank of Pickens County for
their sponsorship,” Young
said. “We also need to thank
Tony Boyd of the First Chris
tian Church of Jasper for use
of their recreation hall for the
presentation, and also to
