“service above self’
The Rotary Club of Jasper presented the Robert S. Stubbs Guardian of Ethics Award

ethical living in their vocation, actions and pronouncements fostering ethical practices.
Rotary President Max Caylor made the presentation.

“I do not believe one day
goes by that Don Martin does
not help someone in some
way,” wrote Rotary 6910
District Governor Tina Fis-
chlin supporting Martin’s
achievements. The Robert S.
Stubbs II Guardian of Ethics
Award was named for the
Canton Rotarian as he “ex
emplified a passion for
ethics, in his vocation, busi
ness and personal life.”
Jasper Mayor Steve
Lawrence says of Martin,
“Only rarely during the path
of our lives do we meet an in
dividual who changes not
just the way we think but the
way we act.” He continued,
“effective leaders inspire oth
ers and that’s where Don
Martin shines a bright light
for others to follow.”
Martin, a native of Mem
phis, began his ethical living
following his dad’s favorite
saying, “if you always tell the
truth, you don’t ever have to
remember exactly what you
said.” He followed that fa
therly advice as he worked at
the Dixie Homes Goodwill
Boy’s Club, Memphis, and
negotiated a resolution in
1969 at the National Champi
onship Student Congress
which won him the national
title.
During his 28 year mili
tary career, retired in 1998 as
a lieutenant colonel, he was
the chief of transportation
and services division, G-4,
headquarters, United States
Army Reserve Command at
Fort McPherson. His day-to-
day leadership of 1,700 sol
diers in five states including
the Army’s only Railroad
Unit speaks of his profes
sional and ethical practices.
Following his retirement
the Anteon Corporation rec
ognized Martin’s ethical
leadership style and was
hired to help open their At
lanta offices. Don marketed,
sold and managed the deliv
ery of a food service Soft
ware package for the Army
Reserve with additional tech
nology valued at over $1.5
million.
Locally, Martin’s ethics
have lead him to serve on the
boards of the Chamber, Hope
House, Tater Patch Players,
Bent Tree Foundation and
FERST Foundation. He is an
Elder and choir member at
Fellowship Presbyterian
Church.
Don’s Rotary experience
began in January of 2007 and
he quickly discovered that he
had been living Rotary’s
Four-Way Test all his life
thanks to his dad’s teaching.
He became club president in
2011, assistant governor in
2016 and district governor in
2019. His wife, Regina, is
also, a past club past presi
dent.
Broker and owner of 515
Life Real Estate Barry Hardi
son said of Martin, “He was
the first agent I hired because
of his outstanding reputation
for professionalism, experi
ence and ethical treatment of
both clients and fellow real
tors.” Martin, in addition to
the local Stubbs Award, has
been nominated to receive
the award on the district
level. Upon receiving the
award Martin remarked, “I
am surprised and honored.”
The words of a humble man.
