Community Responds
Has new recycling center encouraged you to recycle more?

Pickens County opened its
new - and much larger - recy
cling center a few months
ago. We asked our Facebook
followers if having the new
facility has encouraged them
to recycle more, and what
their recycling habits are
now. Here are some of the re
sponses:
Mike Sharon Sedlmeier
- We purchased small tubs
with lids to store and separate
our recyclables. Then it's
easy peasy to dump into the
appropriate bin at the center.
Our system works great for
us.
Leanne Carney - The fa
cility is much nicer, but it
takes more effort to recycle.
This was discouraging at
first, but I have developed a
system of bags and continue
to recycle. Some education or
signage would be nice. The
single lane [does] seem to
take more time, but it’s just
part of it.
Anita Anderson Nations
- Some of our plastics la
beled as “1” are supposedly a
different “1” than they take. I
will continue to recycle,
however it is a little confus
ing when a 1 isn’t a 1.
Matt Logan - I'm very
impressed. I've been recy
cling my cardboard and
mixed paper and have taken
in a few old TVs. The process
is simple and intuitive, too.
Aury G. Friedman -
Seems to me like an enor
mous step backwards which
has discouraged us to the
point of giving up on recy
cling. Having to separate,
store, and transport every
thing in so many categories is
insane in 2021. Collecting
cardboard first, which could
easily be used to carry your
other recyclables to the recy
cling center and then drop the
cardboard off, makes it diffi
cult to do so. Having only
one moving lane that stops
while people wander around
and sort their materials from
their vehicles while their en
gines run, takes much longer
than it should to get through.
...The plastics collection is
limited to a few categories.
Frankly, I could not have
been less impressed by the
new recycling center.
Christy Rutherford -
Love the new recycling cen
ter. Organized, efficient and
the folks are always helpful.
Sarah Bright - It’s a nice
facility but makes it harder to
recycle. In today’s world
where recycling needs to be
such a priority to save the en
vironment, we need to be
making it easier to recycle,
not harder. It will definitely
discourage people to recycle
when it takes more separat
ing and less can be recycled
locally.
Ronnie Holmes - The re
cycling process is easy, but
people should have every
thing separated when they
get there, that’s why the line
backs up.
Paula Drake - Nope.
Gave up recycling years ago.
So freeing.
Val Smith -1 still recycle
but it’s more of a hassle now.
Cathy Tilley - It’s a lot
harder for me to recycle my
plastics. They are not taking
a lot of the kinds they used
to, like yogurt cups, medica
tion bottles, etc. I’m getting
very frustrated with it may
just start tossing it.
Margaret Morrow - Hate
it. The sorting of plastics
[and] papers is [the] reason I
no longer recycle. I can not
read the bottom of all plastics
to verify types, and making it
harder to sort is very discour
aging.
