Holly Chunn, with her son, Garrett, discusses curricu

moved to Ball Ground, and Holly is interested in getting a
good, basic Christian education for her six-year-old son.
mingled with both current
and former students, as well
as faculty and staff.
Although new to this area,
Ahlberg Academy has been
providing an award-winning
and accredited education to
their K-12 students for nearly
two decades, having been
founded in Cobb County in
2003 by John and Ellen
Ahlberg. The school has op
erated from their new Nelson
location since last year, hence
the "grand re-opening."
During these uncertain
times, many parents are con
cerned with the quality of ed
ucation their children are
receiving, especially in the
public school system with
their federally mandated cur
riculum, so Christian schools
have become a welcome al
ternative for many. Some of
those same parents yearn for
an era when their children re
ceived a good, basic educa
tion, and when parents and
the community were allowed
more input to their children's
education.
Ahlberg Academy ac
tively seeks input from the
parents and the community.
They go even further, prom
ising a partnership with par
ents and the community, and
most importantly, as a Chris
tian school, a partnership
with God. For centuries, the
one-room schoolhouse pro
duced a citizenry with the
highest literacy rate in our
nation's history, and although
Ahlberg Academy is not a
one-room schoolhouse in the
traditional sense, for their fa
cility has several rooms and
wings, it is their philosophy
based on the model of the
one-room schoolhouse that
gives their students educa
tional advantages offered by
schools from a simpler, by
gone era. Those include one-
on-one instruction and peer
cooperation and tutelage
from older students who
serve as positive role models.
Students may advance to
higher grade levels when
they prove competence and
are not held back with imag
inary and disfunctional
boundaries and guidelines.
The result is a well-
rounded, independent student
who is ready to pursue a
"healthy, purposeful Chris
tian life." Ahlberg's success is
proven by their alumni,
which includes a fourteen-
year-old Ahlberg valedicto
rian who became his
college's valedictorian at the
age of only 16. Scores of
other successful graduates in
clude one who is studying to
become an astrophysicist and
another, a surgeon.
Parents who are interested
in better educational opportu
nities for their children are
invited to phone 770-312-
0180 and are also encouraged
to visit their website at
Ahlbergacademy.com for
more information. Registra
tion is now open for fall se
mester. Scholarships are also
available.
Caring for dentures improves oral health
Proper dental care and
oral hygiene is essential at all
stages in life, even for people
who have dentures, partials
or implants. People with den
tures must recognize that oral
hygiene protects their den
tures as well as their mouths.
According to the American
College of Prosthodontists,
35 million Americans do not
have any teeth, while 11 per
cent of the population re
quires the use of a complete
denture. In addition, 5 per
cent of the U.S. population
wears a partial denture. The
Canadian Denture & Implant
Centres says that 16 percent
of the population wear den
tures.
Removable dentures re
quire care to keep them clean
and in good repair. Servicing
dentures also helps ensure
wearers’ mouths stay healthy.
Follow these guidelines to
keep dentures clean.
• Handle with care. Den
tures are strong, but they are
not impervious to damage.
Treat them with care while
handling, being sure not to
bend or damage any clasps
when cleaning, and try not to
drop the dentures. When han
dling dentures, Colgate rec
ommends standing over a
folded towel or basin of
water for added protection.
•Brush daily. False teeth
need to be brushed, so don’t
trade in your toothbrush just
yet. Brushing will help re
move food deposits and pre
vent staining.
• Take a break. Remove
dentures before going to bed
and soak the dentures in
warm water or special den
ture cleansers. Removing
dentures for six to eight hours
allows tissue inside the
mouth to recover. Soaking
helps to remove stains, bacte
ria and tartar. The Mayo
Clinic notes that most den
tures need to remain moist to
keep their shape, so do not
allow them to dry out.
• Clean your mouth.
While dentures are removed,
use gauze or a soft toothbrush
to clean the tongue, palate
and cheeks. If you still have
any natural teeth, use a soft-
bristled brush to cleanse. Al
ways rinse dentures before
returning them to your
mouth.
• Schedule regular dental
visits. Dentists can advise
how frequently to have den
tures checked for fit and pro
fessional cleaning. Loose
dentures can cause sores and
infection, so it’s best to ad
dress any issues regarding fit
ting promptly. Dentists also
will inspect the inside of the
mouth for signs of disease or
irritation.
• Eat healthy foods. Make
sure to eat a well-balanced
diet to keep the body and
mouth healthy. Cut up hard
foods like fresh fruits and
vegetables if dentures are im
pacting your ability to eat
these foods.
People of all ages rely on
partial or complete dentures
to maintain their smiles. Rou
tine care is necessary to keep
the dentures intact and
mouths healthy.
