Pickens High academic teams wrap
up winning seasons
If you enjoy watching the TV show
“Jeopardy,” you will have some appre
ciation for the kind of activity members
of the Pickens High School Academic
Team participates in on a weekly basis
from October through February each year. At the beginning
of each school year, students volunteer to participate in “Hi-
Q” and are divided into two categories based on class status.
The junior varsity team is comprised of students in grades
9 and 10; varsity members are in grades 11 and 12. This
year’s junior varsity team was made up of freshmen Cory De-
Bord, Jennifer Reeves, Jordan Backstrom and Christie Puzio,
and sophomores Josh Darnell, Erin Raiser, Nicole VanSant,
Josh Tatum, Mindi Kelley, Daphne Ragan, Myra Kincaid and
Alexis Fairweather.
The junior varsity team went undefeated throughout the en
tire season of regular competition and through two rounds of
region play. On Feb. 20 they were defeated by East Hall in a
heartbreaking 147-146 loss, coming away with second place
in the region.
Varsity players this year included seniors Stan Adams, De-
lene Honea and Kelly Wentworth, along with juniors Julie
Carr, Eric Childers, Sonya Hales, David Holmes, Matt Jones,
Laura Miller, Jennifer Mullinax, Ronnie Rask and Kendra
Warden. The group, too, had a highly successful year, ending
the season in second place in sub-region.

About Pickens men on military duty
- The following official dispatch tells how Crawford Hitt,
of Nelson, won the Bronze Star Medal.
“It is much better to take the trouble to knock out a mos
quito than let him keep bothering you.” This parable was
Staff Sergeant Crawford L. Hitt’s casual explanation to the
questioning of his Bronze Star Medal escapades.
While attached to the 63rd division 254th Infantry Regi
ment in the vicinity of Tiefenbach, Germany, on April 2,
1945, Sergeant Hitt and his squad were given the mission of
seizing and clearing a section of the town in order to permit
the platoon to advance. When the squad was held up by
enemy machine gun fire, Sgt. Hitt went forward alone to try
to knock out the enemy emplacement. By accomplishing his
task Hitt enabled his squad to advance and take its section of
the town.”
As the sergeant is discharged he will don civilian clothes
for the first time in 20 months, of which eight were spent
overseas. Hitt wears the Combat Infantry Badge, Good Con
duct Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge, the European Theatre
Service Ribbon with two battle stars along with his Bronze
Star Medal.
- Mr. Willie T. Owens, who has been serving with the
Army at Amarillo, TX, has been discharged and is now at his
home in Tate.
- Will Hayes Pickett, AMM2-C, was discharged from the
Navy at Jacksonville, FL, on March 1. He is the son of Col.
and Mrs. Roscoe Pickens Sr., and has been serving at Banana
River, FL.
- Pfc. Gradie A. Bowling, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sherman
G. Bowling of Jasper, is now at home with a discharge after
a period of service in the Pacific Theatre, which included the
Army of Occupation in Japan.
- T.Sgt. Wm. Claude Padgett, who entered the Army No
vember 1,1942 was discharged February 26,1946. He served
