ATLANTA - A bill that is
part of Gov. Brian Kemp’s
legislative agenda targeting
human trafficking cleared the
General Assembly Thursday.
The Georgia House of
Representatives unanimously
passed Senate Bill 34, which
would allow victims of
human trafficking to petition
to change their name without
public disclosure.
The bill, introduced by
freshman Sen. Clint Dixon,
R-Buford, one of Kemp’s
Senate floor leaders, passed
unanimously in that chamber
last month.
The legislation builds on
the work of the GRACE
Commission, a task force fo
cusing on human trafficking
chaired by Georgia First
Lady Marty Kemp, state Rep.
Josh Bonner, R-Fayetteville,
who carried the bill in the
House, told his colleagues
Thursday.
The Senate also has
passed a second bill spon
sored by Dixon that would let
victims of human trafficking
sue perpetrators in civil court.
Senate Bill 33 remains pend
ing in the House.

Watch those garbage cans as bruins emerge
Submitted by Appalachia

The Appalachia Georgia
Friends of the Bears would
like to remind the public that
March marks the time for the
Black Bears to emerge from
den.
The first to wake up are
the adult males and
Sub adults in early to mid-
March. Second to emerge are
solitary females and Sows
with Yearlings in late March-
mid-April. Finally, are the
Sows with Cubs of the Year
in mid-April-early May.
They will be out, about, and
hungry.
Attractants like birdseed,
hummingbird feeders, pet
food, livestock food, greasy
barbecues, smokers and fish
cookers, and other wildlife
foods can be accessed by
black bears.
Minimize attractants and
the availability of food re
wards throughout your yard
and neighborhood.
Appalachia Georgia has
approximately 3,000 black
bears. Help us save a bear’s
life and remove the attrac
tants.
The intentional and unin
tentional feeding of bears
teaches them to approach
homes and people for food
which is a recipe for Human-
Bear conflict.
Studies in Canada have
shown that two-thirds of
Bears don’t attack people but they sure do a number on
garbage cans left out at night. Also, watch bird feeders,
smokers and open garage doors leading to pet food.
Human-Bear conflict were
related to improperly stored
garbage. In addition, it de
stroys their teeth, digestive
tracts, and results in a slow
and painful death.
Store garbage in a sturdy
building or place in an ap
proved bear-resistant trash
receptacle and put it out on
the day of pick up goes a long
way.
The Appalachia Georgia
Friends of the Bears mission
is to reduce Human-Bear
conflict through proactive ed
ucational outreach programs,
increase public awareness
about coexisting with black
bears, the use of humane bear
deterrents, and advocacy.

ing Human-Bear Conflict.
