Happy Ramblers

Fabric
Tony has found a piece of
a cowfeed sack that Mama
had made a dress from. I
started thinking about the dif
ferent kinds of fabric. Most
everyone my age remember
the coarse feed sack fabric
and the many uses that they
had. Our neighbor had a
cousin visiting and she made
slips and gowns by simply
cutting a round hole for her
head to go through and two
small holes on each side for
her arms and, like magic, a
new garment.
Then, there was flannel
which was soft and warm. It
felt so good on a cold winter
night to sleep in a long flan
nel gown and great for mak
ing men’s shorts out of
heaver flannel. And then
there was a sheer fabric
called batiste which was used
as an overlay for wedding
and prom dresses. The heavy
linen was used for table
cloths, napkins and many dif
ferent things such as dresses
and men’s summer shirts.
All this was cotton which,
at our time, was grown
around here. This is not a
good area for growing cotton.
Our neighbor once lived in
the Jerusalem section which
was more favorable for
growing cotton. Maggie’s
family lived where they had
big cotton fields. She and Al
bert were courting and Albert
would tell about picking cot
ton there. He worked real
hard to try to pick as much
cotton as Maggie because he
wanted to impress her. How
ever, he just never could
seem to pick as much as
Maggie, but she loved him
and married him anyway. We
got many laughs on hearing
him tell of picking cotton in
a race to try to pick as much
cotton as she was picking.
Ain’t love funny?
Then along came poly
ester which we thought was
grand, however, in the sum
mer you would sweat like a
pig in the sun and in winter
you were as cold as could be.
However, as time passed,
polyester was blended with
other fabric and is widely
used now in making all kinds
of things. I remember when it
was new and was woven in
different ways. I thought it
was beautiful. I got enough
fabric for a pink dress. It was
a choir robe style.
I could write for a long
time on the different fabrics
but I will close on this topic
as you might be getting
bored.
