A couple of adjoining
property owners attended the
meeting with one saying that
while they enjoyed having a
large wooded area there, if it
is going to be developed,
large lots and residential was
the best they could hope for.
There was some discus
sion of setbacks and whether
a privacy fence was possible.
But discussion indicated it is
a wooded property and large
lots, so a privacy fence really
wasn’t practical.
Roland indicated that they
intend to market the lots at
around $22,000 per acre.
The planning commission
recommended the rezoning
without comments.
In the second case, it was
a simple rezoning with no de
velopment expected. The
owner, Silena Jumper, on
Tabitha Drive in the Hender
son Mountain area, said her
property was “the most beau
tiful part of the county.” She
wanted her 7.3 acres changed
from agricultural to rural res
idential so that it would
match the surrounding prop
erties and she could sell a
portion to a neighbor in the
future.
This was also recom
mended without comment by
the commission.
In closing the brief meet
ing, Planning Commission
chair Clayton Preble com
mended the public members
for attending, saying the
commission can make better
decisions with good input
from the community.

future plans to add electricity
and other features. Plans are
to begin construction within
a month. Discussions are un
derway with a local contrac
tor at this time.
Additional plans are to
continue planting pollinator-
beneficial native plants, iden
tify plants and trees with
educational labels, as well as
invasive plant removal.
Funding from the Georgia
Beekeepers Association
comes from the Save the
Honey Bee license plate, a
project the organization
spearheaded and had ap
proved through the state.
Plates became available in
2019. When motor vehicle
owners purchase a Save the
Honey Bee license plate
GBAgets $22 of each sale to
fund educational programs,
grants, training, and other
projects that support honey
bees, pollinators, native
plants, and more. GBA has
already sold enough plates to
pay off the $25,000 they
spent for plate manufacturing
fees.
The Talking Rock Nature
Preserve apiary is named
after Bud Champlin, founder
of the Appalachian Beekeep
ers Association of Georgia.
The apiary project began in
February 2018 and was
named in 2019. Norris joined
the Friends of Talking Rock
Nature Preserve, a volunteer
group that helps with man
agement and park improve
ments, when it formed. He
pitched the idea of pollinator
fields and apiaries at TRNP.
Over the next few years local
and commercial beekeepers
made donations of several
hives/equipment that were
placed at the park. At one
time there were 19 hives.
That number fluctuates de
pending on the year, Norris
said.
