Will it? Won’t it? The grey
clouds moved quickly, but
thankfully the rain held off.
The cool start did not
dampen the spirits of the
opening day of the Jasper
Farmer’s Market. Produce

Red Bean Harvest donated
hot coffee and hot chocolate
for our opening and that
warmed everyone’s hearts

still shopped. Umbrellas and

I am relieved to finally
have an opportunity to apol
ogize to all my gardener
friends who have supported
the Pickens Master Garden
ers through our yearly plant
sale fundraisers. Last year
COVID-19’s arrival pretty
much cancelled the 2020 sale
(after many pre-sales had
been reserved and paid for).
Looking back, I still feel that
stopping last year’s sale was
the correct decision due to
the many safety concerns for
our member volunteers and
public supporters. Even so,
cancelling that sale was an
agonizing decision to make
and was disappointing for
everyone involved.
I have also received sev
eral inquiries about this year.
Are the Master Gardeners
going to have a plant sale this
year? Well, the answer is
“Yes!” but in a slightly differ
ent format. This year the MG
group decided that we could
harvest enough quality plants
from our own environments
to supply the sale.
Doing this has many ad
vantages for the selective
plant buyer. For the 2021 sale
we are offering many hard-
to-find heirloom, native, pol
linator attracting herbaceous
perennials (more than 50 va
rieties) that we have carefully
collected and propagated
throughout the years. We are
also offering shrubs, trees,
fruits, herbs, annuals, and
even a few houseplants. Be
cause these plants have been
actively growing in our own
yards for years, they are ac
climatized to our planting
zone and soil conditions. We
also can guarantee that these
plants will not be over fertil
ized (and thereby less attrac
tive to animal browsing) and
chemically clean. Lastly,
buyers will not have to re
serve and pay for plants in
advance during this sale. All
plant sales will be first come,
first serve (so come early for
best choices).
We are proudly calling
this sale our Hometown -
Home Grown Plant Sale and
it will be held on Saturday,
the tent sale that happens the
second Saturday of each
month. The plants didn’t
mind the rain and neither did
some of the customers who
happily chose plants of inter
ests while holding an um
brella.
Terry Warden of Talking
Rock brought his beautiful
wares of re-caned and refur
bished chairs, cutting boards,
coasters, and eye catching
wall decor. Terry is a master
of chair weaving. He has
been doing it since he was 13
years old. You may have an
old chair that needs new can
ing or repair work done. See
Terry of TDW Chair Weav
ing.
Other new vendors in
cluded Larry Widi with pro
duce, including carrots,
radish, lettuce, and more,
plus, Hazel Grace, Goodies,
Dog Treats, and Decor. And
Luis and Adriana Garcia’s
wares included handmade
resin jewelry.
There was a wide variety
of things being offered this
market day. Wine bottle
crafts like a special bird
feeder and snack holders. Y-
Not Sharp was busy sharpen
ing someone’s knife. Come
and see the market for your
self next Saturday, starting at
7:30 a.m. (for those early
birds) until noon. It is spon
sored by the Master Garden
ers of Pickens County.
By the way, next month,
May 8th, the MGs will be
having a Homegrown,
Hometown Plant Sale held at
the upper parking lot while
the farmers market is going
on, 7:30 a.m. - 12 p.m. These
plants are coming from the
MGs’ own gardens. There
will be a large variety of
plants, although limited
quantities, so it will be first
come, first serve. Master gar
deners will be on hand to an
swer garden and plant related
questions. Be sure to not miss
this event.
