National Day of Prayer May 6th
Submitted by Pickens Ministerial may turn to God in prayer and medi- ation will be hosting a time of public
Association
On June 17, 1952, then President
Harry Truman signed Proclamation
2978 establishing the National Day of
Prayer with these words: "Whereas
from the earliest days of our history
our people have been accustomed to
turn to Almighty God for help and
guidance; and whereas in times of na
tional crisis when we are striving to
strengthen the foundations of peace
and security we stand in special need
of divine support; and whereas the
Congress, by a joint resolution ap
proved on April 17, 1952 (66 Stat.
64), has provided that the president
"shall set aside and proclaim a suit
able day each year, other than a Sun
day, as a National Day of Prayer, on
which the people of the United States
tation": now, therefore, I, Harry S.
Truman, President of the United
States of America, do hereby proclaim
Friday, July 4, 1952, as a National
Day of Prayer, on which all of us, in
our churches, in our homes, and in our
hearts, may beseech God to grant us
wisdom to know the course which we
should follow, and strength and pa
tience to pursue that course stead
fastly. May we also give thanks to
Him for His constant watchfulness
over us in every hour of national pros
perity and national peril."
President Ronald Reagan amended
the law in 1988, designating the first
Thursday of May each year as the Na
tional Day of Prayer.
On Thursday, May 6, 2021, the
Pickens County Ministerial Associ-
prayer in front of the Pickens
County Courthouse at noon.
All believers in the power of inter
cessory prayer are invited to attend
this in-person gathering to covenant
together to seek God's favor upon
America.
The current state of our beloved
nation, which might certainly be de
scribed as an unprecedented crisis of
"national prosperity and national
peril", should call us all to take to
heart and act on the divine challenge
found in II Chronicles 7:14: "If my
people, which are called by my name,
shall humble themselves, and pray,
and seek my face, and turn from their
wicked ways; then will I hear from
heaven, and will forgive their sin, and
will heal their land."

A Jasper resident recently
made a commitment to help
those struggling to put food
on the table. City Electric
Supply (CES) is proud to
share that Benjamin Picker
ing, a project manager for the
company’s Corporate and
National Solutions division,
joined forces with Revolu
tion Church and Serv Inter
national to help distribute
food to people during the
pandemic.
“We saw that people
needed food and the elderly
couldn’t get out. The logical
thing was a food drive,” said
Pickering.

The food drive with Revolution Church had 20 team
members who assisted with delivering all 200 40-pound
boxes of food (around 8,000 pounds total) provided by
SER V International.
Pickering lent a helping
hand in his community not
once, but four times. The lat
est food drive with Revolu
tion Church had 20 team
members who assisted with
delivering all 200 40-pound
boxes of food (around 8,000
pounds total) provided by
SERV International.
“That was actually the
fourth food drive I did with
my church during the pan
demic,” said Pickering, who
has been a member of Revo
lution Church since 2017. “I
helped organize this one and
direct people to boxes of
food.”
“We are extremely grate
ful that we have an opportu
nity to serve families that are
struggling to put food on
their tables during this pan
demic, and we feel blessed
that we have the resources to
make an impact in our local
community,” said Zip Cain
with Revolution Church.
Both Pickering and Cain
believe the food drives
wouldn’t be possible without
the assistance of Serv Inter
national, an organization that
has distributed over eight
million meals worldwide.
Pickering, Cain, and
SERV International hope that
others will be inspired to do
the same after reading their
story.
“Anyone from the com
munity can come and pack
out these food boxes. We
have a signup link each
month, and there could be
anywhere from 25 to 50 peo
ple on any given day,” said
Cain.
This act of kindness has
caught the attention of many,
including CES Cares Social
Impact Manager Karen Gray.
“What Ben is doing is so
important. I think it’s good to
showcase to others inside and
out of the company,” said
Gray.
It’s safe to say that Picker
ing with CES, Cain with
Revolution Church, and Kea
with SERV International are
making an impact in Jasper,
Georgia, one food drive at a
time.

Caught Up in
the Moment

Martha was distracted

she approached Him and

And Jesus answered and

and troubled about many
things. But one thing is

chosen that good part,
which will not be taken

Sometimes the enormity of a task can
be daunting. A project at school or at
work may be too big to be completed
in the allotted time and cause us to be
so anxious that we fear losing our job
or receiving a failing grade on the
assignment. Oftentimes the problem is
our perception that we must get it all
done right now! Just as we eat a large
meal one bite at a time, big jobs
should be completed one step at a
time. And this lesson is not just for
projects which we must complete at
work or at school. The project of life
requires us to love our friends,
families, and neighbors, and this can
often be exceedingly difficult. People
can be hard to love and often try our
patience, but these are the times when
it is even more important to act with
tenderness and loving kindness. As the
day wears on, our patience often
wears thin and our reserves of charity
and kindness begin to run low. Then it
may be important to take some time
by yourself to pray or just to be with
your thoughts. If you cannot act kindly,
sometimes the next best thing is
simply to remove yourself from the
situation. At least that way you will not
regret saying or doing something
unkind. And finally, if the task at hand is
too much for the day, consider whether
you can at least get through the next
hour, or even the next minute. With
God’s help, all things are possible.
