Minister’s
fly everywhere. After the
presents were open, the boys
couldn’t play with just one
toy for any length of time.
They were easily distracted
with all that was happening
around them.
Distractions are a part of our
everyday life. These distrac
tions are why we have to
train ourselves to concentrate
when our attention is needed.
This attention is especially
true while we’re driving. If
we are distracted while driv
ing, it could be dangerous. In
the same way, the enemy will
attempt to take our attention
away from the Lord to en
snare us in his trap.
In the story of Martha, we
read that she was consumed
with her duties in the kitchen
while Mary listened to Jesus.
Out of her frustration,
Martha got upset with Jesus
because He wouldn’t force
Mary to help her. Can you
imagine telling Jesus to do
something as if He was your
Corner
servant? Martha did.
In Romans 12, Paul teaches
us to present our bodies as
living sacrifices unto the
Lord which is our reasonable
service. Mary chose to pres
ent herself to the Lord and be
taught, but Martha was pre
occupied.
In the context of Paul’s
teaching, we are instructed to
present ourselves to the Lord
and avoid being conformed
to the dictates of this world.
As I stated earlier, distrac
tions are inevitable. There
fore, we must not allow them
to keep us from the Lord, or
it will adversely affect us
spiritually.
Martha allowed the pressure
of the event to cause her to
get caught up in the moment,
and she showed disrespect to
Jesus. This pressure can just
as easily happen to us when
we allow distractions to take
us away from having quality
time in the presence of the
Lord. If we allow the pres
sures of this world to take
over our heart’s attention, we
will begin to conform to
them.
Perhaps you’ve been in an
environment that seemed
heavy or intense, and before
you knew it, you were being
influenced by it. Our envi
ronment or the atmosphere
around us can cause us to
conform to its influence, like
Martha in the kitchen.
In this fast-pace world, we
need to remind ourselves
regularly to keep our atten
tion on the Lord. Instead of
having the world dictate how
our day is going to go, we
should allow God’s presence
to lead us through it in peace.
We are the one who decides
how our day is going to af
fect us.

Dragons need sweep to make playoffs
in part to a Connor Shouse
homerun. Pickens would add
three more runs in the third
inning, and an insurance run
in the fourth. Shouse and
Senior Seth Densmore both
had multiple hit perform
ances.
Drake Sutton was the win
ning pitcher for the Dragons
allowing only three hits, zero
runs, and by string out five.
On Saturday, Pickens
would host Cookeville High
School for a double header.
The Cavaliers proved too
much for the Dragons in two
high scoring affairs. In the
first game, Cookeville es
caped with a 14-11 victory
thanks to a seven run second
inning. The Dragons looked
strong offensively in the
game. Seth Densmore drove
in five runs in the loss behind
a three hit, two home ran per
formance. Parker Rhodes
also notched three hits in the
game. The Dragons totaled
16 hits in the contest. In the
second game, the Dragons
lost an early lead to the Cavs.
Pickens led 3-1 after the first
frame. However, Cookeville
would put up seven runs in
the third inning and never
look back. The final score in
Jasper saw the Dragons fall
14-4.
This week the Dragons
enter their final region series
against the Ridgeland Pan
thers. The Dragons still have
a shot at making the playoffs,
but they will need a sweep
the Panthers and need North
west Whitfield to sweep Cen
tral in order to secure the
final spot.

Sports History

April 18-April 24
April 18 th:
On this day in 1968, the
American Basketball Associ
ation had its first champi
onship game, the opening
contest of the finals between
the Pittsburgh Pipers and
New Orleans Buccaneers.
The Pipers rolled to a 120-
112 victory behind Connie
Hawkins’ team-high 39
points. Charles Williams and
Art Heyman recorded 26
points apiece, with Heyman
grabbing 10 boards as well.
New Orleans center, Red
Robbins, tallied game-highs
of 41 points and 23 rebounds
while teammate, Doug Moe,
logged 30 points with 12
boards.
April 19th:
On this day in 1944, the
Boston Yanks selected Notre
Dame quarterback, Angelo
Bertelli, as the number one
pick of the NFL Draft. Notre
Dame’s very first Heisman
winner never played a down
for the Yanks due to military
service. Bertelli eventually
joined the All-America Foot
ball Conference, playing 16
games for the Los Angeles
Dons and Chicago Rockets.
April 20th:
On this day in 2002, the
expansion Houston Texans
made Fresno State quarter
back, David Carr, their first
overall draft pick. Carr threw
for over 4,800 yards and 46
touchdowns during his senior
season, but his years in
Houston were rough to say
the least. In five seasons with
the Texans, Carr compiled an
overall record of 22-53 and
was sacked a total of 249
times.
April 21st:
On this day in 1995, the
Boston Celtics hosted the
New York Knicks in their
final regular season game
ever played at Boston Gar
den. Dee Brown and Sher
man Douglas led the Celtics
with 22 points apiece, but the
Knicks were keyed by Hu
bert Davis’ 20 points off the
bench. Greg Anthony led all
New York starters with 19
points while Charles Oakley
collected 12 points and 16 re
bounds. The Knicks spoiled
the moment by walking out
of the garden with a 99-92
win.
April 22nd:
On this day in 1914, Babe
Ruth made his professional
baseball debut with the Inter
national League’s Baltimore
Orioles. This was also Ruth’s
first starting assignment as a
pitcher when the O’s faced
the Buffalo Bisons. The 19-
year-old tossed a six-hit
complete-game shutout
while adding two hits at the
plate. He did a little of every
thing as Baltimore blanked
the Bisons, 6-0.
April 23rd:
On this day in 1954, the
late Hank Aaron hit the first
of his 755 career home runs,
which came during the Mil
waukee Braves’ 7-5 14-in-
ning victory over the St.
Louis Cardinals. Aaron, who
made his major league debut
10 days earlier, went deep in
the top of the sixth. He fin
ished the evening three for
seven with two RBI’s and a
pair of runs.
April 24th:
On this day in 1974, the
National Football League
granted a franchise to the city
of Tampa Bay. The team be
came known as the Bucca
neers and they became the
first squad in league history
to suffer through a winless
season, going 0-14 in 1976.
In fact, the Bucs lost their
first 26 games before defeat
ing the New Orleans Saints
on December 11, 1977.
Tampa’s infamous losing
streak remains the longest in
NFL history, but futility was
ultimately replaced with
glory. The Bucs captured two
Lombardi trophies, with the
most recent title taking place
just last season.
