Good Sam annual golf tournament
fundraising event set for May 12
The annual Good Samari
tan/Ed Delaney Memorial
Golf Tournament will again
be held at the Big Canoe Golf
Club this year on Wednesday,
May 12. It has been one of
the biggest fundraising
events of the good Samaritan
Health and Wellness Center
for the past few years.
Due to the COVID-19
health crisis, Good Samaritan
decided to cancel its three
major fundraisers for 2020
including the golf tourna
ment. The 2019 tournament
raised over $20,000, which
was used to provide the med
ically underserved in the
community with quality,
compassionate, and complete
healthcare in an atmosphere
of dignity and respect.
Since Good Samaritan
opened its doors in 2002, it
has seen over 18,000 unique
patients. Despite the difficul
ties that 2020 brought, “Good
Sam” has continued to pro
vide an excellent
level of care to the
community. Last
year it served 3,780
unique patients, 69
percent of which
did not have insur
ance. Through
emergency
COVID-19 funds
provided by the
Health Resources
and Services Ad-
ministration
(HRSA), Good
Samaritan was able
to purchase tents to
provide no-contact,
drive-thru COVID-
19 testing. By the
end of the year,
they had performed
over 960 tests at no
cost to their patients. It has
also administered more than
800 COVID-19 vaccines

Be-Paws We Care’s
“Have a Heart” Fundraiser is
for the homeless, heartworm
positive pets in Pickens
County. Our goal is to raise
$4,000 in donations that will
specifically pay for urgently
needed heartworm treatment.
The cost of treatment for
each dog can be $250-$500
and many dogs go without
treatment for this fatal dis
ease due to the expense. Just
In the first three months of
2021, 11 homeless dogs in
our county tested positive for
heartworms. Generous dona
tions from supporters to date
enabled Be-Paws We Care,
Inc.(BPWC) to sponsor and
treat these dogs and all of
them now have a “second
chance” at life. With already
having 11, how many more
will test positive in 2021? In
2020, BPWC sponsored 18
Heartworm treatments and
19 in 2019. We believe that
heartworm disease is a terri
ble thing to stand in the way
of a pet having the possibility
of a second chance at life,
and a permanent family and
home.
So you might be wonder
ing what causes dogs to get
Heartworm disease? Mosqui
tos are to blame for infecting
dogs with heartworms. We
live in the south and it has
one of the highest rates of
Heartworm infections. Really

no surprise, right? It takes
about seven months, once a
dog is bitten by an infected
mosquito, for the larvae to
mature into adult heart-
worms. They then lodge in
the heart, lungs, and sur
rounding blood vessels and
begin reproducing. Adult
worms can grow up to 12
inches in length, can live 5-7
years, and a dog can have as
many as 250 worms in its
system. Initially, there are no
symptoms. But as more and
more worms crowd the heart
and lungs, most dogs will de
velop a cough. As it pro
gresses, they won’t be able to
exercise as much as before;
they’ll become winded eas
ily. With severe heartworm
disease, we can hear abnor
mal lung sounds, dogs can
pass out from the loss of
blood to the brain, and they
can retain fluids. Eventually,
most dogs will die if the
worms are not treated.
The good news is Heart-
worm disease is preventable.
Heartworm prevention costs
as little as $6 to $12 for most
monthly applications. Isn’t
this worth it, to ensure the
health of your fur family? So
please have your pets tested
and take preventative meas
ures.
