Obituaries
Darryl Payne
1963-3/30/2021
Darryl Payne, 58, loving
and faithful husband, father,
grandfather, son and brother,
went to see his Savior after a
sudden and brief illness.
A Christian many years,
he attended Living Word
Church in Jasper, GA.
He leaves behind a wife,
six children, one brother and
sister-in-law and many
friends, brothers and sisters
in Christ. He is preceded in
death by his parents, Floyd
Payne and Jeanette S. Payne.
Darryl was born in De
catur, Georgia, the youngest
son of Floyd Payne and
Jeanette S. Payne.
He attended Decatur High
School, and graduated from
Georgia State’s Respiratory
Therapist program and
worked at Georgia Baptist
Medical Center. He worked
as director of respiratory care
at Pickens General Hospital
and then was promoted to
purchasing director. Later, he
began his own home respira
tory and medical equipment
company, Hometown Home
Health in Jasper. In addition,
he opened Polar Vortex, a
coffee and dessert shop. Any
one who has ever eaten one
of Darryl’s desserts knows
what a wonderful baker he
was. An elder, youth leader
and worship team member of
his church, he was the epit
ome of a servant of the Lord.
A genuine heart and love for
people, anyone who knew
him, knew this.
He will be dearly missed
by many.
A Celebration of Life will
be held Saturday, April 17th
at Living Word Church, 215
Pioneer Industrial Blvd.,
Jasper. From 12-3 p.m. there
will be a drop in visitation
followed at 3 p.m. with a
limited seating service/eu-

U.S. Veteran
Thomas Richard Drake of
129 Madison Court, Jasper,
GA, passed away at The Re
treat in Jasper on April 15,
2021 at the age of 81.
Tom (Tippy) was born
July 1, 1939 in Syracuse NY
to Thomas Francis Drake and
Margaret (Meere) Drake. He
was raised in Syracuse and
joined the Marine Corp at the
age of 17. He was a proud
veteran and served in Mo
rocco, North Africa 3 years
from 1957 thru 1959. After
serving in the Marine Corp
he returned to Syracuse
where he joined the Syracuse
police department.
Tom worked for Smith
Corona, Kardex, Sperry, and
Unisys in New York, Ohio,
and Minnesota. He was the
founder of 5R Processors. He
retired early from Unisys and
he and Jo bought a farm in
Catawba, WI, where they
lived for 32 years. The farm
was their pride and joy, and
will always be considered
“Home”.
While living in Minnesota
he enjoyed camping, fishing,
and exploring the North-
woods. A favorite time was
a house boat trip with family
and friends in the Voyageurs
National Park. He continued
these hobbies after moving to
Wisconsin, and at the cabin
on Thousand Island Lake in
the UP of Michigan. A day of
fishing off the pontoon was
always a special day, rain or
shine. Friends stopping by
for coffee in the mornings
was a favorite time for him at
the farm and cabin.
Tom also enjoyed travel
ing, including a fly in fishing
trip to Canada, winter vaca
tions in Mexico, and several
months in 1985 when he and
Jo worked in Germany. They
traveled and explored Europe
along with two of their chil
dren Jodi and Rick.
He and Jo enjoyed watch
ing Syracuse Orange NCAA
basketball games, the
Philadelphia Eagles, the Min
nesota Vikings and especially
the Green Bay Packers NFL
games.
Tom is survived by his
wife of 40 years, Jo Ann
(Stringer); 5 children Thomas
Drake, Sheila Drake, Joseph
Drake, Daniel Drake, and
Nicole Kavanagh; 7 grand
children, Brandon Drake,
Katie Drake, Emma Drake,
Daniel Drake, Taylor Drake,
Kinsey Kavanagh and Haley
Kavanagh; 2 great grandchil
dren; three step children, Jodi
Madaus, Marci Simons, and
Rick (Karen) Lybeck. 3 step
grandchildren Joseph Si
mons, Nora Lybeck, and
Klara Lybeck; sister Mary
Kennedy (Jim), sisters- in
law Judy Carlisle & Jeri
Brown, and many nieces and
nephews. His nephew Sean
described his Uncle Tom in
saying he was a charismatic
and genuine person. Indeed
he was.
Tom was preceded in
death by his parents, a sister
Margaret(Peg) LaHart, a
brother James(Beanie)
Drake, his father- & mother -
in -law Kenny & Irene
Stringer, his brothers- in- law
Thomas Carlisle and Ken
Stringer, and his sister in law
Colleen Stringer..
Because of travel distance
and the Covid pandemic,
there will be no service at this
time. A celebration of life
will be held at a later date.

Hospice in Jasper would be

Elizabeth Mae Gayton,
72, of Ball Ground, passed
away Sunday, April 18, 2021
at her residence.
Funeral services are
scheduled for 11 a.m. on
Wednesday, April 21, 2021 at
the Sosebee Memorial
Chapel with Rev. Scott
Holden officiating. Mrs.
Gayton will be cremated fol
lowing the funeral service.
Mrs. Gayton was a mem
ber of Hopewell Baptist
Church. She enjoyed cooking
and loved spending time with
her family.
She is survived by her
children, Cody Gayton
(Amanda), Susan Dean
(William), Joann Melton,
Michael Flowers, Jason Reid
and Beth Roberts; siblings,
Andy Vaughan, Cindy Etris,
Chris Vaughan and Glenn
Vaughan; several grandchil

She was bom April 24, 1935

Joy Black
Joy Anne Roby Black, 95,
died on April 15, 2021 in
Jasper, Georgia.
She was bom in Erin, Ten
nessee on October 15, 1925.
After growing up in a small
town in Middle Tennessee,
Joy led a wonderful life as an
enthusiastic military wife en
joying a long partnership
with her husband Charles.
Joy and Charles lived in
many places in the United
States, Central and South
America and Germany be
fore moving to Destin,
Florida and then to Jasper,
Georgia.
She was preceded in death
by her husband Col. ( Ret.)
Charles S. Black; her parents,
Maynie and Leslie Roby; her
sister, Ouina ( Bitsy)
Fletcher; and her brother,
Roland Roby. Joy is survived
by her children, Jodi Thur
mond ( Paul), Penny Brown,
and Lesle Manget ( Fred ).
She is also survived by
grandchildren, Paul Thur
mond Jr., Joshua Thurmond,
Betsy Thurmond Matz,
Conor Brown, Adam Brown,
Evan Brown, Taylor Brown
Fontenot, Felice Manget,
Caroline Manget Briggs and
Jon Thomas Manget. Great

Joy will be remembered
for demonstrating the essence
of her name. She was an avid
bridge player, excellent
golfer, a loving mother and
grandmother, and a friend to
many. She was a great host
ess to many family gather
ings.
A graveside service will
be at Georgia National
Cemetery on April 26, 2021.

Paul Barfield, 72, of Ball
Ground, Georgia passed
away Tuesday, April 13,
2021.
The memorial service will

Mr. Barfield was a United
States Army Veteran, retired
from Glass, Inc as a superin
tendent, and loved the Geor
gia Bulldawgs.
Paul is survived by his

gia; daughter, Nicole Barlow
and her husband Bruce, of
Cartersville, Georgia;

Doris Burton
Betty Doris Burton, 87,
passed away on Tuesday,
April 13, 2021 at Northside
Hospital Cherokee. She was
born in Texas and relocated
to Georgia in 1955 when her
husband, Fred Burton, was
discharged from the U.S. Air
Force.
She was preceded in death
by her husband; a daughter,
Janyse Burton Lawson; and a
son, Timothy Fred Burton.
She was also predeceased by
her parents, her brother and
her sister.
She is survived by a son,
Andy Burton, and two grand
sons, Griffen and Samuel
Burton, all of Pickens
County.
She was a member of the
First Baptist Church, and
served several years as the
church secretary after retiring
from the corporate world.
She had been a licensed real
estate broker, employed in
the land division of the Lib
erty Corporation in their At
lanta office.
At her request, her re
mains were cremated. Those
wishing to make gifts to
honor her memory may do so

Earnest Cecil Densmore,
64, of Ellijay, Georgia passed
away Tuesday, April 13,
2021. He was bom May 25,
1956 to the late Hallman and
Jewel Roper Densmore.
Earnest is survived by his
son and daughter-in-law,
Chris and Mary Katherine
Densmore of Jasper; daugh
ter and son-in-law, Christy
and Kenny Rowe of Holly
Springs; son and daughter-in-
law, Chad and Jennifer Dens
more of Canton; nine
grandchildren; four great
grandchildren; and his sister,
Marie Lowery of Ellijay.
Several nieces, nephews, and
other relatives also survive.
He was preceded in death
by his father, Hallman Dens
more; his mother, Jewel
Roper Densmore; and his
son, Mardy Densmore.
