National Day of Prayer May 6
Following weeks of contentious
and futile debate, the members of the
Continental Congress of 1787 were
rebuked by then elder statesman
Benjamin Franklin for their failure
to incorporate public prayer in the
process of crafting the Constitution
as America's roadmap to the future.
"Flave we now forgotten that power
ful Friend? Or do we imagine we no
longer need His assistance? I have
lived a long time, and the longer I
live, the more convincing proofs I
see of this truth - that God governs
in the affairs of men. And if a spar
row cannot fall to the ground with
out His notice, is it probable that an
empire can rise without His aid? We
NATIONAL
Day Mayer
have been assured in the Sacred
Writings, that “except the Lord build
the Flouse, they labor in vain that
build it.” I firmly believe this; and I
also believe that without His concur
ring aid we shall succeed in this po
litical building no better than the
builders of Babel." Following
Franklin's chastisement, our Found
ing Fathers established regular
prayer, led by local clergy, as a vital
part of their daily labors. The Con
stitution and Bill of Rights were
completed in relatively short order.
The Bible exhorts that "supplica
tions, prayers, intercessions, and
giving of thanks be made for all
men, for (rulers) and all who are in
authority, that we may lead a quiet
and peaceable life in all godliness
and reverence, for this is good and
acceptable in the sight of God our
Savior." ITim. 2.1-3
All those concerned with the cur
rent moral and spiritual climate of
our nation and community, and who
believe that imploring our "powerful
Friend" for His blessings can and
will make a difference, are invited to
join together for a time of prayer or
ganized by the Pickens County Min
isterial Association. On Thursday,
May 6, beginning at noon, a local
observance of the National Day of
Prayer will be held in front of the
Pickens County Courthouse.
Clergy and members from area min
istries, community officials and res
idents in general are encouraged to
take part in this opportunity to raise
our collective petitions to heaven for
the betterment of the place we call
home.

Let’s Know Who We
Are in God’s Sight
By Rev. Tony Elder
Last weekend we par
ticipated in a baby
shower for our son and
his wife as they look for
ward to the arrival of their
first child in the near fu
ture. In the midst of open
ing their baby gifts, they
graciously paused for a
moment in order to pres
ent their own gifts to the
two sets of grandparents
who were there.
Ours was a wonderful
little plaque that reads,
“Our greatest blessings
call us Nana & Papaw”.
It’s true. I’ve come to dis
cover that grandchildren
are one of the greatest
blessings in our lives.
And I’ve gladly em
braced my title of Papaw
and the relationship it
suggests. I’m looking for
ward to having our sev
enth such blessing call
me by that name.
As blessed as we are to
have grandchildren, there
is an even greater source
of blessing in our lives.
Without Him, we would
n’t possess any of the
other joys and blessed
ness which we experi
ence, including those
wonderful grandchildren.
We owe everything to our
Lord and our God. So that
plaque started me think

Anyone can do his work,

until the sun goes down. And this is
all that life really means.” -Robert

Sometimes the enormity of a task can
be daunting. A project at school or at
work may be too big to be completed
in the allotted time and cause us to be
so anxious that we fear losing our job
or receiving a failing grade on the
assignment. Oftentimes the problem is
our perception that we must get it all
done right now! Just as we eat a large
meal one bite at a time, big jobs
should be completed one step at a
time. And this lesson is not just for
projects which we must complete at
work or at school. The project of life
requires us to love our friends,
families, and neighbors, and this can
often be exceedingly difficult. People
can be hard to love and often try our
patience, but these are the times when
it is even more important to act with
tenderness and loving kindness. As the
day wears on, our patience often
wears thin and our reserves of charity
and kindness begin to run low. Then it
may be important to take some time
by yourself to pray or just to be with
your thoughts. If you cannot act kindly,
sometimes the next best thing is
simply to remove yourself from the
situation. At least that way you will not
regret saying or doing something
unkind. And finally, if the task at hand is
too much for the day, consider whether
you can at least get through the next
hour, or even the next minute. With
God’s help, all things are possible.
