Pickens queen nominee
Kim Kinne Ryan and Gilmer
king nominee Justin Heitman
were crowned the queen and
king of Mardi Gras in the
Mountains for 2021 to a large
roar of the crowd. They
raised the most money in
votes.
The queen and king both
wanted to participate in
Mardi Gras to give back to
Georgia Mountains Hospice
because of the care given
them in times of loss. For
Queen Kim, it was the care
and compassion shown to her
husband and business partner
Jim in his final days dealing
with cancer.
King Justin also has first
hand knowledge of hospice's
importance as they helped his
dad in his last days suffering
from CLPD. “The hospice
staff that supported us was
outstanding and it’s an honor
to raise money to support
them," he said.
Mardi Gras in the Moun
tains is a fun event but what
it enables through Georgia
Mountains Hospice's care,
the Knights Christian heart
and Rotary's humanitarian
service is truly a mark of self
giving.

There’s a first time for
everything — Monday after
noon, April 26th was the first
time Pickens County Airport
manager Randy Thomason
knew of an electric plane tak
ing off from Pickens.
The pilot of that aircraft
was Jeffrey Banks. Banks
technically lives in Alaska
but travels the lower 48 in an
RV with his Silent 2 Electro
in tow.
Banks was at the airport
Monday afternoon to assem
ble his machine and ride the
local wind. He said it wasn’t
a plane, but a glider with a
small 30 horsepower electric
motor just powerful enough
to get off the runway. He said
once he is high enough, he
shuts off the motor and all he
can hear is the controls rat
tling and air coming through
the hatch.
It flies much like a bird,
using the air currents to stay
airborne, but Banks said
birds know how to do this
without instrumentation but
pilots need a high-tech sensor
which detects air pressure
around the plane and relays
that information to the instru
ment panel.
He said he has taken off
from many different airports
to explore, and has entered a
few glider competitions. His
most recent flight was last
weekend, during a South
Carolina competition.
Banks started flying when
he was in college by operat
ing the tow plane at a nearby
airport. He went on to make
a career in the airline busi
ness and is now retired. He is
a lifetime member of the
Soaring Society of America
and encouraged anyone who
was interested in this hobby
to check out the Chilhowee
Gliderport, which is only an
hour and a half away in Ben
ton, TN.
