walk with Christ that our
faith will take on another di
mension in our lives. As a
Christian, we have placed
faith in the work of Christ to
save us, but after conversion,
we must use our faith in
Christ so that God’s Spirit
can perform God’s work in
us.
Learning how to walk by
faith will require that we un
dergo a challenging process
so that we are able to trust
God with our lives and not
just our soul. It’s difficult to
fathom how we can trust the
Lord with eternal security
and at the same time, strug
gle to trust Him with our life
in this temporal world.
Now, we have arrived at
the point of this devotion. As
Christians, who truly want to
live for God, we can also
struggle with feelings of in
adequacy. We can also battle
within ourselves between
what we know we should do
and what we want to do.
There are many believers
who are living each day of
their life at this place in the
process of being trans
formed.
While we undergo the
process of being transformed
into sons and daughters of
God, we must reconcile what
we want in life with what
God wants for us. We must
learn to correctly process
how we are to allow God’s
will for us to supersede what
we want for ourselves. Even
though Jesus is the Prince of
peace and lives in us, we can
have anything but peace as
we war between what we
need to do and what we want
to do.
If this describes where
you are spiritually, know that
the war will cease the mo
ment you call out to the Lord
and surrender to Him. You
see, the battle to become
Christ-like doesn’t belong to
us. It’s not our works that
will perfect us, but it is God’s
grace that will empower us to
die to self that we can please
God.
As you surrender the bat
tle in you to the Lord and
allow Him to work in you
both to will and do His good
pleasure, you will receive
and walk in peace. Give the
battle to Him and receive
grace and peace.

May 2-May 8
May 2nd:
On this day in 1923, Wal
ter Johnson collected the
100th shutout of his major
league career when the
Washington Senators blanked
the New York Yankees, 3-0.
Johnson allowed three hits
and four baserunners in a
complete-game performance.
The Big Train retired in 1927
with 110 shutouts, which re
mains a major league record.
May 3rd:
On this day in 1977, the
Tampa Bay Buccaneers used
their first-round selection on
USC running back, Ricky
Bell. The 1976 Pac-8 Confer
ence Player of the Year
played six NFL seasons, with
his best coming in 1979. That
year saw Bell achieve per
sonal highs of 283 carries,
1,263 yards and seven touch
downs while leading the
Bucs to the NFC Champi
onship Game. He retired in
1983, citing weight loss,
aching muscles and severe
skin disease as his reasons for
leaving the game. Bell passed
away a year later at the age of
29.
May 4 th:
On this day in 1975,
Houston Astros first base-
man, Bob Watson, scored the
one-millionth run in major
league history. The milestone
took place in the opening
contest of a doubleheader be
tween the Astros and San
Francisco Giants. Watson
went hitless in three at-bats
but scored twice during
Houston’s 8-6 victory.
May 5 th:
On this day in 1904,
Boston Americans pitcher,
Cy Young, became the first
hurler to throw a perfect
game in major league base
ball’s “modern era”. Young
registered eight strikeouts as
the Americans defeated the
Philadelphia Athletics, 3-0. It
was the only perfecto of
Young’s 22-year career,
along with three no-hitters.
May 6th:
On this day in 1915, the
Boston Red Sox dropped a 4-
3, 13-inning decision to the
New York Yankees. This con
test saw Boston pitcher, Babe
Ruth, hit the first of his 714
major league home runs.
Ruth went three for five
while also throwing 12 and
one-thirds innings.
May 7 th:
On this day in 1972, the
Los Angeles Lakers defeated
the New York Knicks in five
games to win the NBA cham
pionship. The Lakers rolled
to a 114-100 victory, captur
ing their first title since 1954
as well as their first since the
franchise moved from Min
neapolis to Los Angeles. Wilt
Chamberlain was named the
Most Valuable Player follow
ing his 24-point, 29-rebound
performance. Gail Goodrich
tallied 25 points and Jerry
West scored 23 despite fin
ishing just 36 percent from
the field.
May 8 th:
On this day in 2018, Seat
tle Mariners pitcher, James
Paxton, tossed a no-hitter
against the Toronto Blue
Jays. The British Columbia
native faced 29 batters,
hurled 99 pitches, issued
three walks and struck out
seven batters as the Mariners
blanked the Jays, 5-0. Paxton
became the first Seattle
pitcher to post a no-no on the
road. He also became the sec
ond Canadian to have a no
hitter in the majors, including
the first to throw one in
Canada.
Continued from IB
Gartrell
only pitched 4.1 innings in
one game with a 4.15 ERA.
Meanwhile, Bryse Wilson
underachieved with a 1-2
record in three starts and a
6.75 ERA.
Atlanta’s two big free
agent signing during the off
season Charlie Morton (5.08)
and Drew Smyly (8.05) have
not produced as expected for
their $11 million salaries.
The only really encourag
ing young arm among the
starters is Huascar Ynoa. The
powerfully built (6 foot, 2
inch, 220 pounds) 22 year old
is 2-1 with a 2.96 ERA and
34 strikeouts in 27 innings.
The Braves’ only salva
tion is the fact that the rest of
the NL East is no better than
.500 either. Atlanta trails di
vision leader Washington by
two games, but the Braves
led the division as recently as
last Thursday. Certainly,
there’s plenty of time left for
this team to get on track, but
it just seems to be slip sliding
away at the moment.
THURSDAY. MAY 6. 2021 PICKENS COUNTY PROGRESS PAGE 5B

Tough fishing at finale
sion, Jackson Moss and
Tucker Lowe ran away with
the victory thanks to a 61b
largemouth. Wyatt Richards
and Colby Goforth once
again showed out in the Jr.
Division. The event also
locked up the Angler of the
Year award for Ledbetter and
Payne, who were consistently
strong at all three events.
While the Pickens Bass
Fishing Club events have
come to an end for the 2020-
21 school year, there are still
teams of anglers traveling
around the state and repre
senting Pickens County.
Many of the anglers will
be fishing in the GA Bass
Nation High School tourna
ment, and event that Pickens
has won two times. There are
definitely a lot of talented club build a reputation as one
young anglers in the pro- of the best groups in the state,
gram, who have helped the
Jackson Moss and Tucker Lowe.
