Letters totke Editor .P
To the Editor:
I just got to enjoy the
wonderful chance of spend
ing some time and taking a
step back to experience the
beautiful start-up of that
sweet little town called Talk
ing Rock. Friendly people
and neighbors helping neigh
bors after our resent flooding
rains reminded me of the lit
tle place I grew up in. If
you're ever in the area, may I
please suggest with a tndy
grateful heart and admiration
that you take a minute to
check out the history of the
buildings there. Sweet little
schoolhouse and Shadow
Creek Antiques totally took
me back to shelling peas with
my grandma and hearing her
stories, because of Audrey
and Steve who graciously
took the time to share stories
they've gathered about the
area. I love the story of the
big rock from the creek that
was placed on the corner of
their store, and my heart was
warmed by the tale of the
replica old phone searched
for, found, and placed in the
exact same spot that the first
phone in the area was lo
cated... and knowing that it's
ready to go if party lines ever
return in style.
I just want to say thank
you for maintaining such a
wonderful, fantastic place to
just enjoy the days and mem
ories of yesteryear.

To the Editor:
Our county is a mess. I
just said what thousands in
Pickens County are thinking.
Flow did we get here? Flow
did we get to the place where
the best interest of the student
seems to come last? (Al
though, I will say that seems
to be a running theme in our
education system across
America these days. Political
agendas first - students sec
ond.) It can’t be good for stu
dents that this school system
is in constant upheaval be
cause of a superintendent re
volving door. What kind of
superintendent is Pickens
County going to attract when
we seem to fire them on a
regular basis?
Flow is it that school
board members have come to
have so little respect for tax
payers that they are fine
blowing a few hundred thou
sand dollars of our money, in
order to satisfy their desire to
wield their power to get their
way? Flow is it that board
members and faculty mem
bers are trading vindictive,
catty text messages like
school children? Where are
the adults? Where are the
leaders? What are the priori
ties? Moreover, where are the
servants?
I am not originally from
here, but I’ve lived here for a
number of years. I don’t
know all of these people in
volved and maybe that is
good, because my viewpoint
is likely different because of
it. Maybe when I say that I
am disgusted and ashamed of
what is going on here, it will
pack a bigger punch. This en
tire debacle reads like a bad
soap opera or a pathetic real
ity show.
It is time for all of us to
somehow get involved. We
have to right the ship. We
must take what is broken and
fix it. We must have people
of integrity in these positions,
and that may mean that those
who would not typically run
for school board must step
forward and throw their hat
in the ring. Our reluctance to
step up has created a vacuum,
and when there’s a vacuum,
it usually gets filled by some
thing that’s not good. And
that answers the question of
how we got here.

Scholarship Committee
Chair John Johnson is ex
cited about the expansion of
eligibility for Pickens stu
dents this year. “We want to
give back to the community
as much as possible while
honoring our veterans and
this change opens up more
opportunities,” he said. “We
know having a veteran in the
family can have a significant
positive impact on the lives
of our young people. This is
just one way we as a Legion
giveback for the sacrifices
made. “The change will open
up more opportunities. ”
