Community Responds
Growth, July Fourth celebration
By Angela Reinhardt

After the Progress posted an image
of last week’s front page on social
media, which featured a story about the
boom in residential development in
Pickens County and a story about the
Fourth of July festivities returning, sev
eral people commented. Here are some
of those comments:
Tina Geiger - Obviously developers
don't care about infrastructure. If they
did, nothing would be built. They buy
land, build, and sell. People buying
don't look at infrastructure (though they
should), or school capacity, or sewer ca
pacity, or internet service. They see the
location and fall in love.
Hope Hooks - Like 515 isn’t already
a hot mess...then to add houses right off
the interstate.
Michelle Grant -1 hate to see our
small town being shoved towards the
same situation as Canton and Ellijay. I
try to find a positive for every negative,
but it’s hard. Someone had mentioned
that maybe with all of these new resi
dents the local restaurants will be able
to hire reliable employees but I honestly
don’t see the people who are spending
a quarter to a half million dollars on a
cramped neighborhood working at Mc
Donald’s or Popeyes.
Carrie Anderson - We need a red
light at Worley Crossroads and 515. It's
already a mess that will make it worse.
Ron Manglona - Not surprised. I
just expect our commissioners to con
trol the growth. I don’t want urban
sprawl for our county.
Robin Pruitt - Those cluster neigh
borhoods destroyed Canton.
Jeremy Surratt - Yay more traffic
and humans.
Jason N Candace Cagle - Jasper
will never be like Canton. The only
thing I care about that’s on the cover is
that the 4th of July activities will be
back this year. My kids love going every
year and we missed it dearly last year.
Will definitely cherish it this year.
Jeremy Surratt - Welcome to coun
try living where we are building 50
clustered up suburban neighborhoods
right off a clogged up highway.
Hank Coleman - How ‘bout we go
ahead and add more lanes to all the
roads around here before creating more
traffic.
Robert Cantrell - Must be million
aires moving in all them houses.
Who can afford the lumber anymore?
Rosie Marie Smith - That little
mountain town is gonna turn into Mari
etta. Good luck y'all.
Susan Horton - The city are the
ones approving these homes right off
the highway, not the county. These
homes should at least be further apart to
limit traffic problems, but do they care?
Matt Mayfield - Planning and de
velopment hasn’t ever been Pickens
County’s strong suit.
Colin Buckley - My thing is who
would want to live right off the high
way? Some of those houses are so close.
Seems like a weird set up.
Kristina Cook - Obviously the resi
dents of this town don’t like a lot of the
development that’s going on, but does
your government care? Nope.
Lawrence Chumley - I can’t even
cross Highway 515 now.
Tracey A. Smith - No fireworks.
Not fair to the animals or pets, unless no
sound fireworks.
