Day of Prayer speakers call
for humility in the nation
By Dan Pool
Editor
dpool@pickensprogress.com
Speakers from local
churches told the crowd of
around 100 on the court
house lawn for the Day of
Prayer May 6 that the nation
needs to be humble in ask
ing God to help us in these
times, with one preacher
adding that if we spent more
time praying and less time
criticizing , we’d be a lot
better shape.
The Thursday event,
hosted by the Pickens Min
isterial Association, in
cluded short prayers from
different church leaders for
government, schools, public
safety workers and the na
tion and state.

Mount Zion praise team, said
the nation needs to do three
things: humble ourselves,
call on the Lord and turn
from our evil ways. He said
everyone likes calling on the
Lord, but we don’t like hum
bling ourselves or changing
our ways.
He was followed by Mt.
Zion’s preacher Ben Mock
who said that during “great
awakenings” in the nation’s
history, the people saw a
major impact of the revivals
including the closing of tav
erns and brothels, and the
police having little to do as
crime dropped.
Mock added that if the
modem church was doing
half what it was supposed to
be doing, then the court-

There was a poster
that was very popular
around the time I was a
teenager. Although there
were different variations
which developed, it gen
erally showed a cute kit

while its front paws were
clinging to a rope or a tree
branch. The accompany

in there, baby!” Every
once in a while a version
of that image will still
show up on the internet
today.
We all need such en
couragement at times,
don’t we? Therefore it’s
not surprising that God
often offers such inspir
ing reminders to us in His
Word. The Bible directs
us to patiently endure and
to persevere. One such
passage is found in James
5:7-11.
It’s addressing people
who are being oppressed
and tells them to keep
holding on because the
Lord is coming back. It’s
basically saying, “Hang
in there, baby, because
Jesus is coming!”
However, let’s not get
the wrong idea about this
connection between per
severing and the Second
Coming of Christ. It’s not
pointing to this approach
ing event as our way to
escape hard times. Unfor-

Simplicity
“But godliness with
contentment is great gain.
For we brought nothing into
the world, and we can take
nothing out of it. But if we
have food and clothing, we
will be content with that. ”
1 Timothy 6:6-8 NIV
W hen reduced to its bare elements, life
is really quite simple, and yet we
often make it complicated. We need
food and water to live, and not much more,
other than perhaps a roof over our head and
a few items of clothing. Have you ever looked
around your house and asked of everything
there whether you could live without it? Most
of us could probably get rid of ninety percent
of the stuff in our house and be just fine
without it. In fact, we might find a huge
burden lifted from us by giving it all away. As
Mother Teresa said, “The less we have, the
more we can give. The more we have, the less
we give. There are no complications, and yet
we complicate our lives so much, by so many
additions.” Likewise, in the ethical and
spiritual realm, we tend to complicate things,
when it’s really quite simple: love God and
love your neighbor. We sometimes use the
word “simple” pejoratively, suggesting that
someone who is simple is a bit dull, but
perhaps we fail to realize that even the
“simplest” among us can fulfill the
requirements of being a good and godly
person. And it may be that there is a special
place in God’s heart for these simple souls.
