Folk school
Poole said the idea behind
the folk arts is really more of
crafts that were essential to
early Appalachian settlers,
such as carving, furniture
building, herb gathering,
quilt making. “It’s not neces
sarily art classes,” she said.
“It’s more about a cultural
lifestyle.”
In the three years the
school was open pre-pan
demic, they were attracting a
growing amount of interest
for classes involving all the
basics like carving and quilt
making, though most of it
came from outside this area.
“We’ve not had a tremendous
amount of local support,” she
said. “It’s mostly people from
Canton and Marietta and
other places.”
Poole said at the SAFS,
Mins#

they set out to create classes
that were briefer and more af
fordable than regional folk
schools like John C. Camp
bell where students spend a
full week and pay consider
ably more.
“We try to structure it
where it’s not as intensive,”
she said. “We offer skillsets
that can be learned in a week
end and let working people
attend and keep costs lower
so people can get the basic
instructions.”
Watch for more informa
tion about the reopening in
later issues of the Progress.
It’s little overgrown because of inactivity due to the pandemic, but the Southern Ap
palachian Folk School hopes to resume classes and programs in a few months.

Members of the Burnt Mountain Center with the Georgia Riders club.
On Friday, May 21, the
Burnt Mountain Center held
a long awaited event, the
BMC Luau. Due to the
COVID virus, BMC has had
no big events in over a year.
This year’s luau was awe
some. Over 100 guests en
joyed the music of
HighRidge at the Newton
Park. Everyone was rocking.
Dinner was provided by
PADD, with hamburgers,
chips, and drinks. The Kona
Ice truck provided a sweet
icy treat. Thanks Erika.
A special visit from the
Georgia Riders riding club
was a big surprise for all. The
riders came bearing gifts for
BMC. They provided a
karaoke machine, DVD
player, art and crafts basket,
flower pots and ornaments.
The club members talked
with individuals, showed
them their bikes and prom
ised to visit us soon.
A big thank you to the
HighRidge Band, PADD,
Georgia Riders riding club,
and Erika. We all had a great
time.

RECENT COURT DECISION PRELIMINARILY
APPROVING THE SETTLEMENT WITH THE
REMAINING DEFENDANT
The United States District Court for the Eastern District
of Virginia (the “Court”) has approved a class and has
preliminarily approved a settlement with Golden Peanut
Company, LLC in a class action lawsuit captioned In Re
Peanut Farmers Antitrust Litigation, No. 2:19-cv-00463
(E.D. Va.) (the “Action”).
The Defendants are: Golden Peanut Company LLC
(“Golden Peanut), Birdsong Corporation (“Birdsong”),
and Olam Peanut Shelling Company (“Olam”).
WHAT IS THIS CASE ABOUT?
The Defendants in this lawsuit, Golden Peanut, Birdsong,
and Olam, are peanut shellers. Plaintiffs in this lawsuit
are farmers who sell Runner Peanuts to the Defendants.
Plaintiffs allege that Defendants conspired to suppress
competition and to pay depressed prices to farmers in
the United States for Runner Peanuts between January
1, 2014 and December 31, 2019, in violation of federal
antitrust laws. Plaintiffs further allege that because of
the conspiracy, they and other farmers were injured
because they were paid less for their Runner Peanuts than
they would have been paid in the absence of the illegal
conduct. The Defendants have denied and continue to
deny Plaintiffs’ claims.
On April 5, 2021, the Court approved settlements with
Defendants Olam and Birdsong totaling $57,750,000.
More recently, the Court preliminarily approved
a $45,000,000 settlement with Golden Peanut
(“Settlement”). Collectively, the settlements with
Olam, Birdsong, and Golden Peanut total $102,750,000
(“Settlement Fund”). If the Settlement is approved the
Action will be concluded as to all Defendants.
