Steve Sewell was inducted into the PHS Hall of Fame
Class of 2018-19. Sewell was head football coach at PHS
for 18 years. He had a record 87 wins and four state playoff
appearances in that time.
spoke about Coach Sewell’s
impact upon his life and
shared several quotes from
many former players in a
very touching moment of the
evening.
Martha Prince and Mary
Pauley spoke highly about
their classmate, good friend
and the next inductee, the late
Paula VanSant. She was a
1969 graduate from PHS and
a phenomenal athlete for the
Dragonette basketball team.
During her career, she ac
crued 1,779 points and was
named the PHS Offensive
Player of the Year in 1967,
1968 and 1969. In addition,
she was the leader of the
1968-69 region champi
onship team that finished the
season with a 23-1 record.
She also participated on the
PHS Tennis team and in 1968
and 1969 advanced to the
state semifinals in doubles. In
1969, she was the first female
to be awarded the PHS All
Sports Trophy and was voted
“Most Athletic” by her senior
class. Sadly, after a 21-year
career in the US Navy, she
passed away in 2005. In the
audience that evening were
many of her former team
mates and family.
The last inductee of the
evening was the Dunn family
who has, for many decades,
provided immeasurable sup
port to all athletic programs
at Pickens High School in
some form or another.
Through their contributions,
Dragons and Dragonettes of
multiple eras have been im
pacted. Not only the athletic
program, but also Pickens
High School itself has bene-
fitted from their generosity
and giving since 1952. Don
Jack Dunn and his sister Christi Blackwell accepted the
Hall of Fame induction on behalf of theirfamily, including
his parents Lee and Martiele Dunn (shown below). The
Dunn family has been supporters of Dragon sports teams
for decades.
Boggus, Jr. discussed
the support and love
for the school and the
community that the
Dunn F amily and
Jasper Drag Store
has shown for many
years, referring to
them as the “standard” by
which all families should as
pire to be. Jack Dunn recalled
advice that his father, the late
Lee Dunn, gave him when he
began working at the store,
“You are a part of this com
munity now and you will get
involved and invested.”
In 2019, the PHS Athletics
Hall of Fame committee cre
ated new “Legends” awards
to recognize individuals who
had not only impacted Pick
ens High School Athletics
while they were there, but
have also continued to influ
ence the school and commu
nity. It was decided that one
of these awards would be
given each year to a coach or
supporter who has made
great contributions to PHS
athletics. The committee de
cided to name this award in
honor of an individual who,
during his career, coached
football and basketball,
started the PHS wrestling
program and served as an ed
ucator and coach from 1981-
2007. Coach Kyle Rasco
presented the “Tom Judkins
Award” to its namesake,
Coach Tom Judkins.
Coach Rasco then pre
sented the next “Legends”
award which was created to
recognize a former athlete
who not only excelled in a
PHS sport, but who has also
shown great care and support
throughout their life for PHS
athletics. The committee
voted to not only give the in
augural award to this next in
dividual, but felt it was
