Roper Park renovation plans move forward
Rezonings, extension agent position also discussed
Commissioners recognized four PHS band students, one from each grade, who received one of the highest awards in the band program. Band
Director Michael Oubre said they were selected “because they’re kind, they’re helpful, they do what’s supposed to be done, they practice, they’re very
high-performing players on their instruments, and they’re just good people. ”
(L-R) Commissioner Jerry Barnes, PHS Band Director Michael Oubre, Jerry Knight (Most Outstanding Freshman), Levi Kuyper (Most Outstanding
Sophomore), Owen Galligan (Most Outstanding Junior), Paige Klein (Most Outstanding Senior), Commissioner Becky Denney and Commission Chair
Kris Stancil. Oubre thanked commissioners for sponsoring these awards for the last several years.
Pickens Sheriff Detention Officer Nick Southern and Deputy Eric Morris received the agency’s second-highest award,
the Medal of Merit, and were recognized by commissioners at their May meeting. Southern and Morris were honored
for their actions saving the life of an inmate who tried to hang himself in the detention center on Sept. 13 of2020. “It
was only due to the watchful eye of Southern and the immediate action of Deputy Morris that the inmate is alive today, ”
said Mitch Yeargin.

Commissioners are forg
ing ahead with plans to make
major renovations to Roper
Park. In addition to entering
into an agreement with an ar
chitectural firm at their May
meeting, they also formed a
steering committee that will
be directly involved with the
SPLOST-fiinded project.
Commissioners were pre
sented with a proposal from
Lose Design that outlined the
scope of their plans to “help
to prepare a master plan and
the drawings and render
ings,” said Pickens Commis
sion Chair Kris Stancil.
Lose Design is the same
architectural firm that de
signed Cherokee Veterans
Park.
The total amount of the
contract is $29,500, which
Stancil said does not meet the
threshold for a decision from
a full board, “however it’s
large in terms of the potential
scope...so I felt like it was
better we go ahead and pres
ent it here with the board.”
Stancil said he would be
glad to serve on the steering
committee as the board rep
resentative, but offered the
role to district commission
ers. Commissioner Jerry
Barnes volunteered to serve.
The steering committee will
also consist of Pickens
Recreation Director Brian
Jones, Pickens County
Recreation Board members
Tyler Mitton, Brian
Cleghom, and Chad Goss, in
addition to two citizens at-
large, Matt Dunn and Carrie
Pool.

been budgeted for in 2021.
