By Mary Migliaro,
Parent Mentor
Every parent wants to see
their child grow up to be a
strong, independent, well-
rounded child but getting
them there is the trick. There
are no instruction manuals
for babies that lay out the
groundwork for how to ac
complish this goal, but par
ents know it is important.
A well-rounded child is
one who thinks for him- or
herself, who is secure in his
or her decisions and has a de
veloping sense of who he or
she is and where he or she fits
in the world. Well-balanced
kids should have a combina
tion of classroom skills, good
behavior, responsibility, and
work habits.
Here are some of the best
ways for parents to teach
skills that will help their chil
dren become well-rounded.
• Teach social skills.
A 20-year study by re
searchers at Pennsylvania
State and Duke University
shows a positive correlation
between children's social
skills in kindergarten and
their success in early adult
hood. Teaching your kids
how to resolve issues with
friends, share their belong
ings, listen without interrupt
ing, and help others in the
home is a great place to start.
• Don't overprotect.
In today's age of helicopter
parenting, many parents have
difficulty allowing their kids
to solve problems when they
rush in to fix challenges for
them. Drawing on a Harvard
University study, Julie Lyth-
cott-Haims argues that allow
ing kids to make mistakes
and develop resilience and
resourcefulness is critical in
setting them up for success.

After some recent
computer issues, a diag
nostic check revealed that
my hard drive was failing
and there was nothing I
could do about it. The de
vice continued to work at
times, although very
slowly.
Periodically a warning
would be displayed of
“imminent failure”. I
used the time to prepare
for that inevitable event -
backing up my files,
copying links to favorite
sites, and shopping for a
replacement. The day
after my new computer
arrived, the old one “gave
up the ghost”. I’m thank
ful I had the opportunity
to get ready for its col
lapse rather than it hap
pening suddenly without
any advance notice.
We’re living in times
in which our nation, soci
ety, the religious commu
nity, and just the world in
general is having serious
issues. We see signs all
around us warning of
“imminent failure”. We
seem to be on the verge of
a collapse of the world as
we know it. Major shifts
in morals and values are
affecting all other areas of
our lives.
As families erode, as
lawlessness increases, as

Being Childlike
“Do not love the world or
anything in the world. If
anyone loves the world, love
for the Father is not in them.
For everything in the world—
the lust of the flesh, the lust of
the eyes, and the pride of
life—comes notfrom the
Father butfrom the world. ”
1 John 2:15-16 NIV
I n the eighteenth chapter of the Gospel of
Matthew, the disciples ask Jesus who is the
greatest in the kingdom of heaven. As
Jesus often does, he both shows them and tells
them the answer. Jesus calls a child to come
over, sets the child in their midst and says
“Truly I tell you, unless you change and
become like little children, you will never
enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore,
whoever takes the lowly position of this child
is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.”
(Matthew 18:3-4 NIV) Jesus calls explicit
attention here to the humility and obedience
of the child, who came and sat with them
without asking questions. And as usual, the
kingdom of heaven reverses the values of this
world. In the kingdom of heaven, the lowly and
humble shall be first. Pride and arrogance,
and self-serving ambition may get you the
highest position here on earth, but in the
kingdom of heaven, the highest position is for
the humble and lowly, and those with the
simple faith and obedience of a child. The fact
that the disciples are even asking the question
reveals to Jesus how much they are stuck in
the mindset of this world, thinking of
hierarchies and pecking orders. Jesus wants
them to re-evaluate their worldly values and
consider that things in heaven will be quite
different. Consider how much your own values
(materialism, ambition, pride, etc.) are really
the values of this world and not the values of
the kingdom of heaven.
