On Saturday, May 22,
Pickens County ARES (Am
ateur Radio Emergency Serv
ices) hosted a district-wide
training event for 13 north
west Georgia counties.
This event was held at
Cornerstone Church, just off
Camp Road, from 8 a.m. - 4
p.m. Titled a “Portable Oper
ations Training Exercise”
(POTE), this event attracted
hams for training classes,
comradery, and the simula
tion of possible emergency
situations. Each participating
county brought their own
tents, tables, radio equip
ment, laptops, VoIP phones
and antennas to be able to
communicate via the spoken
word and email messages -
all through radio signals.
Sixty-five hams attended
from Pickens, Gilmer, Gor
don, Whitfield, Murray and
Cherokee counties, as well as
many members of the MAT
(Mutual Assistance Team) -
highly-skilled radio operators
from around the state who
also conducted the training
classes and provided techni
cal support when needed.
Classes included solder
ing, net operations, antenna
construction, Go-Box design,
multimeters, programming
radios and Winlink (email)
via the radio. After lunch,
each team retreated to their
own tents and awaited the in
structions and tasks. Each
task had to be completed and
returned to the Command
Center via email. (Remem
ber, no internet was used for
these operations, all messag
ing and communication was
done through radio waves.)
The final challenge was
for each county to designate
certain members of their
team, move a portable radio
station across the field into a
specified tent, set up the sta
tion, and immediately send
radio emails to the command
center, in simulation of im
mediate response to a
downed-plane scenario.
It was an exhausting, but
exciting, full day of events.
For anyone interested in am
ateur radio, and seeing it in
action, our annual Field
Day will be held June 26 -
27, 2 p.m. - 2 p.m. Every
county/club across the
United States will be setting
up their own radios and an
tennas, for the public to view,
discuss, and even talk.

There are a total of 137
merit badges in Scouting, and
the scouts of Troop 836 have
been having a lot of fun
working on a wide variety of
these badges.
Badges such as Robotics,
Lifesaving, and Geology
have proved to be some of
the most interesting.
Recently, Dr. Lyn Lewis
of Wayside Animal Clinic in
Jasper worked with the
scouts to complete their Vet
erinary Medicine merit
badge. Dr. Lewis, himself an
Eagle Scout, took time out of
his schedule to work with the
boys. They toured the facil
ity on Cove Road, and
learned about operating the
practice, Dr Lewis’ day-to-
day life, and some entertain
ing anecdotes of the life of a
vet.
Troop 836 is sponsored by
Jasper United Methodist
Church. If you are interested
in learning more about scout
ing, please visit our Face-
