Minister’s
Corner
with His divine presence and
not be destroyed by His
power.
Exodus 20 : 18-21, Now all
the people witnessed the
thunderings, the lightning
flashes, the sound of the
trumpet, and the mountain
smoking; and when the peo
ple saw it, they trembled and
stood afar off. Then they said
to Moses, "You speak with
us, and we will hear; but let
not God speak with us, lest
we die." And Moses said to
the people, "Do not fear; for
God has come to test you,
and that His fear may be be
fore you, so that you may not
sin." So the people stood afar
off, but Moses drew near the
thick darkness where God
was. -NKJV
God had instructed Moses to
bring His people to Mount
Sinai so that He could make
Himself known to them. In
stead of the Israelites being
excited to have an encounter
with their God who had de
livered them from the land of
bondage they were very
afraid.
Although God meant them
no harm, they pulled away
from His presence out of
fear. The Lord wanted them
to develop Godly fear that
would keep them from sin,
not be afraid of Him. It’s
worth noting that God al
lowed them to have this ex
perience with Him while He
was giving them His Law.
The purpose of having laws
is to keep people from doing
wrong and being punished
for their transgressions. He
was demonstrating to them
and us that we can only
please Him through His pres
ence and grace, not by keep
ing commandments.
After the people told Moses
that they didn’t want the
Lord to speak to them, they
told him to speak with God.
As the people looked on,
Moses ascended the Mount
of God and entered His pres
ence but wasn’t consumed.
This event should have made
the people curious, but it did
n’t. Why didn’t they have a
desire to be in God’s pres
ence like Moses?
How is it possible that Moses
wasn’t afraid, but chose to
draw near to God? Remem
ber, he had seen the fire of
God burning in a bush and it
wasn’t consumed. Since
Moses humbled himself and
obeyed God, he was granted
grace to approach God and
not be destroyed.
We don’t overcome sin in our
lives by trying to quit it. We
stop sinning when we hum
ble ourselves and receive
God’s grace to draw closer to
God. It is the presence of
God in our hearts that keeps
us from sin, so that we can
have the pleasure of being in
God’s presence unashamed.

JUMC welcomes visitors with new program
There is in fact, lots to see
at JUMC these days. Now
that restrictions from the pan
demic have been lifted,
church life is beginning to re
turn to what we have known
as normal. Church services
and Sunday School classes
are open to all, as well as the
many small groups within
the church. Every other Sun
day, the service alternates be
tween contemporary and a
traditional format at 11. Ad
ditionally, the services are
still being offered online
through YouTube and the
Jasper United Methodist
Church Facebook site.
Youth Minister Eric Jus
tice is very excited about the
new shirts and its message.
“It’s kind of like a walking
billboard," he said. “It’s
telling folks we’re back. If
folks come and see... they
will see the camaraderie and
love. It’s all about a trans
formed heart through the
love of Jesus.”
The youth program is in
high gear getting the kids in
volved in great fun activities
and sharing the love of
Christ. Be sure and check the
JUMC website or Facebook
for dates of the many upcom
ing events that include pool
parties, hikes, fun outings,
and more.
Family activities are also
being planned. Bent Tree
pavilion will be the site of the
swim/picnic family and
church outing scheduled for
June 16, starting at 5:30.
Bring a covered dish to share
with meal beginning at 6. A
second family gathering will
be held on June 18. This
gathering is being hosted by
JUMC and First Baptist of
Jasper. The outdoor event
will begin at 6pm with games
in Eagle Park, directly be
hind JUMC. At dark, a fam
ily friendly movie, “The
Croods 2... ANew Age” will
be shown in the lower JUMC
parking lot. Hot dogs and all
the trimmings will be served.
The whole community is in
vited. Though reservations
are not required, it would be
helpful to hear if you plan to
come via Facebook for plan
ning purposes. Come and
enjoy the fellowship and
bring a neighbor along with
your lawn chairs.
“The slogan ‘Come and
See’ is not just designed for
those outside of the church,”
spoke Justice. “It’s an invita
tion and reminder for every
one that in spite of
everything that we’ve expe
rienced this year, Jesus is still
here. He’s here for everyone.
Come and See for your
selves.”

Bible Reading Marathon on the
Courthouse Steps July 14th
By Kim Echols
The Bible Reading Marathon (BRM) hap
pens on July 14th at 7:14 am at each county's
courthouse to read God's Word aloud. This
year we will gather on the steps at 6:45 a.m.
to have fellowship time.
The BRM is led by Jeri Tuck of Cochran,
GA. and began in 2004 when Jeri and friends
took to their courthouse steps Bleckley
County and began reading God's Word
aloud. Since then it has grown to cover every
county in the state and Jeri now divides and
assigns the Scriptures to each county to en
sure the whole Bible is read that day at that
time. The signature verse for the event is 2
Chronicles 7:14 which states," If my people,
which are called by my name, shall humble
themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and
turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear
from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and
will heal their land."
Last year I had the pleasure of organizing
the Bible Reading Marathon for Pickens
County. For the event, God brought together
believers from six different churches in the
area. Those relationships have strengthened
over this past year and now we readily pray
for each other and serve side by side. So,
when asked by the statewide organizer if I
would like to do it again, I readily agreed.
This year, I, as a part of The Prayer Part
ners of Pickens County, am hosting the 3rd
annual Bible Reading Marathon on July 14
at 7:14 am at the courthouse. We will gather
at 6:45 am with our Bibles, chairs and a ther
mos of coffee to fellowship before we pray
and begin reading Numbers 3-6. If you'd like
to join us, please feel free. I also invite you
to share this information with your Pastor,
Youth Leaders, friends, families and neigh
bors as their county will be hosting a BRM
that morning as well.
The Prayer Partners of Pickens County
was bom out of the relationships God
brought together between churches in Pick
ens County. The focus of our ministry is to
unify believers in the county and bring them
together to serve in practical ways and to in
tercede for each other as they reach the lost
for Christ. If you'd like more information,
please see our Facebook page or e-mail
kimecholsO 1 @gmail.com.
