each Sunday beginning this week, June 20.
The later service and Livestream service remain at 11a.m.

saves time at check-in on the
day of the drive.
Donating blood not only
saves lives (an average of
three persons per unit of
blood), it is good for your
own health, helping to lower
the risks of heart disease and
cancer. It is also one of the
best and simplest ways to be
like Christ, who gave his
blood for us. According to
Leviticus 17.11, “The life of
the flesh is in the blood.”
Please consider visiting Mt.
Zion to give “the gift of life.”

We Need Contrite
Humility Rather
than Pride
By Rev. Tony Elder
It seems that an in
creasing number of or
ganizations and
businesses are jumping
on the bandwagon of cel
ebrating June as “Pride
Month.”
Since when has pride
become such a virtue?
Granted, we all should
have proper respect for
ourselves as human be
ings created in the image
of God. However, we also
have to keep in mind that
His image in us has been
marred due to sin. We
aren’t bom perfect, but
with a sinful nature and
various related flaws.
We can value who we
are while at the same time
recognizing our short
comings. Too often self-
respect grows into
self-exaltation or thinking
too highly of ourselves,
becoming the quality the
Bible condemns as pride.
And the more we think
of ourselves, the less we
tend to think of our Cre
ator. We exalt ourselves
above Him, even to the
point of defying Him and
the truth of His Word.
As our culture empha
sizes pride, it is in a sense
affirming its abandon
ment of God’s Word. The
Bible doesn’t treat pride
as a characteristic to cel
ebrate. It is roundly con-

The Hard
Work of Love
L ove is only rarely the idyllic bliss
pictured in the movies and in romance
novels. Often love requires patience,
perseverance and sacrifice. Those whom we
are called to love are often underserving of our
love if judged by the standards of this world,
but by God’s standards, all are deserving of our
love as fellow children of God. And even when
our beloved is deserving of our love and easy to
love, it still hurts when we have to say goodbye
or contemplate that our beloved will one day
leave us through death. Love is hard work and
it often hurts. It is doubtful that the pleasures
and comforts of love will always outweigh the
pains and discomforts that it inevitably brings,
and yet, we must go on loving. For what is the
alternative? To become a hater? To give up on
love and sink into a state where we neither
love nor hate? By no means, for a life without
love is truly meaningless. When we say that
God is love, we are essentially saying that the
meaning and purpose of life and existence is
love.
-Christopher Simon
“Love is patient, love is kind. It
does not envy, it does not boast, it
is not proud. It does not dishonor
others, it is not self-seeking, it is
not easily angered, it keeps no
record of wrongs. Love does not
delight in evil but rejoices with
the truth. It always protects,
always trusts, always hopes,
always perseveres. ”
