Happy Ramblers
by Ann Parka
Nova Scotia
I have no idea why I
wanted to go Nova Scotia but
I had wanted to for years.
Peggy and I found out about
a trip to Nova Scotia and we
signed up. We had another
friend who wanted to go and
she signed up, making our
group of three.
We almost missed the bus
because we were on the
wrong side of the road to
catch the bus but we got on
and off we went. Of course,
the other passengers were not
too happy that we had caused
the delay but I started talking
and laughing with them,
telling funny things and soon
they forgot that we had
caused the delay.
Most of the people on the
bus were retired professors,
lawyers and doctors, a little
above our usual traveling
companions. They had each
of us to tell what they had
done before they retired, so
when it came my turn, I told
them that I had worked many
different jobs, however, the
one I was most successful at
was at a hosiery mill, hook
ing small thread on a wheel
to sew the toes together and I
was called a hooker, which
makes for very interesting
conversation. I told how I
had been so good at this job
that I was the best hooker that
had ever worked there. Of
course, I got a lot of laughs
from this story.
In Nova Scotia, we saw
some of the most beautiful
scenery that I had ever seen.
I will say this, there was a
slight problem with the lan
guage since we all spoke
English and the people in that
area spoke a completely dif
ferent language. It was so
funny when we would stop to
ask directions and they could
not understand us nor could
we understand them. It was
quite a sight to see this “sign
language” taking place.
In Nova Scotia there is a
strange phenomenon. There
is a spot in the river that
looks like there is a whirl
wind in the river where the
water was swirling around
causing the water to run both
east and west. One side went
toward the east and the other
side went to the west.
We went to the home of
Ann of Green Gables, seeing
the restored farm where she
was raised. We saw the
house, the bam and all the
different out buildings and
even got to take a ride in the
buggy. It was so interesting,
especially if you like the
story of Ann of Green
Gables. We also went to
Prince Edward Island where
they raised the potatoes for
Lay’s potato chips and the
potatoes used by McDonalds.
We also saw the first scare
crow garden that I had ever
seen. There were scarecrows
made to represent all the fa
mous people - presidents, etc.
There must have been a hun
dred different scarecrows.
This was what I think must
have brought on what we see
so many of in the local town
and communities. We stayed
in some of the most unusual
hotels. Each room in the
hotel was given a name.
I could write at least an
other hour of our trip to Nova
Scotia.
I am so glad that I got to
go while I was still able to do
my traveling.
