THURSDAY. JULY 1.2021 PICKENS COUNTY PROGRESS PAGE 3B
More pets go missing on July 4th
than any other day of the year
Share these great tips to
provide a safe Independence
Day for your cats and dogs.
Independence Day is fun for
us, but it’s the worst day
imaginable for some cats and
dogs. They literally think the
world is ending. Do them a
favor and make sure they’re
well protected and safe so
they stay with you for many
years to come. Happy Fourth.
1. Prepare for the
worst-case scenario. July 4th
is a great annual reminder to
be prepared in case your pet
escapes or gets lost. If your
pet is not wearing a collar
with an ID tag, now is the
best time to get one. You’ll
also want to double check
that your pet is microchipped
and that the chip is registered
with updated contact infor
mation. Microchipping will
give you peace of mind and
likely help you find your fur
family quickly when they go
missing. You can get this
done at any vet or the Pickens
County Animal Shelter (706-
253-8983) will do this by ap
pointment for only $20.
2. Avoid the crowds.
Avoid bringing your pooch to
super crowded events, pa
rades, and other gatherings
with a lot of commotion or
people. A combination of
heat, loud noises, packed
spaces and scorching black
top can not only be stressful,
but harmful to your pet’s
health. Better to leave them
at home in a cool spot with
lots of water. It’s especially
wise to avoid bringing your
pets to firework events, as
they could panic and try to
run.
3. Work them out. Be
sure to give your pets lots of
exercise during the day, so
they’ll be a little worn out be
fore the scary noises start at
night. A nice long run or play
session during the daytime
will help with your pet’s
overall stress and anxiety lev
els. Some pets may sleep
right through the night time
celebrations.
4. Head indoors before
the fun begins. Don’t wait for
the fireworks to be in full
swing before taking care of
your pet. It’s best to bring
him or her indoors or put
them in a cozy spot well
ahead of the first boom of
fireworks. Which brings us
to...
5. Create a safe space.
Pre-pyrotechnics, create a
safe, escape-proof space in
your home. Lower the blinds,
close the windows, provide a
bed or crate where they feel
comfortable, offer a special
chew toy to distract them and
turn on the TV or radio to
help mask the noises outside.
6. Wrap them up. Con
fining movement in dogs and
cats actually has a calming
effect on them, which is why
you might want to consider
an anti-anxiety wrap or coat.
7. Give them a chill
pill. If you’re really worried
about a pet who stresses eas
ily, talk to your vet in ad
vance about anti-anxiety
chews, drops or other reme
dies that can help your pet
relax. There are plenty of pre
scription and homeopathic
solutions out there that can
help your pet get the extra
dose of relaxation that he or
she needs.

An Eastern-eyed click
beetle sits atop a daylilly
stem in a local garden last
week. While these beetles
usually stick with mixed
woods, this one was out for
the day.
According to Wikipedia,
the ‘false eyes’ depicted are a
defensive adaption designed
to confuse or frighten poten
tial predators. “The eyespots
are a form of self-mimicry, in
which one part of the body
has adapted to mimic another
body part,” said the
Wikipedia website.
The adult beetles’ diets
consist of nectar and plant
juice. However the larvae are
voracious predators, going
after wood borers in decaying
logs.

Crafters add handmade elements
to weekly Farmers Market
Gorgeous flowers, plants and veggies were brought to the first Wednesday Market by
Earth Folk Farm.

Whoa. Gas spoons? Free
donut seeds? To get the an
swers to these questions you
must go see Terry Warden at
the Farmers Market. Terry
does TDW Chair Weaving,
but he has some interesting
things you should see as do
many of the crafters at the
market.

Roy GuessArt is up too? Gi

raffe took a walk out of the
market the week before. This
past weekend he had a
smaller size giraffe that
mixed in with all the interest
ing, colorful animals that he
has reimagined; pigs, turtles,
chickens, and more.
The plant marketeers were
up to their elbows in colorful
and interesting choices, in
cluding indoor or porch
plants, plus, garden favorites.
The veggie growers were
stocked up with squash and
garlic, plus many other deli
cious choices for your best
meals. Breads and brownies?
Go see Tony of Bakewurx.
Or look for the cookies by
Corrine. DEE-licious. (and
super popular, so get there
early!) There are other bak
ers, too, like Irene Neal of
Burnt Mountain Pies.
And if your kitchen needs
some joy to see Kim Echols
of Kim’s Kitchen or Chris
tine Wheeler of Christi’s Cre

how to make a kitchen happy.
Thank you, Kebra, of Red
Bean Harvest for bringing
coffee to perk up the early
crowd. We appreciate the
taste and smell of a great cup
of coffee. Folks, don’t forget
there is much to be found at
our market. Bread, pies,
cakes, meat, eggs, jellies,
jams, pork skins, are just
some of the things for your
taste buds. Cutting boards,
cuckoo clocks, bowls, cedar
chests (table top size), and
decorative items for your
home or yard can be found
there as well.
Come and see all the great
items that are available at the
Jasper Farmers Market held
at Lee Newton Park area.
With the Fourth of July cele
bration at hand, the Wednes
day market may be at the
back gate of the park from 11
am until 2 p.m. Saturday’s
market will also be at the
back gate of Lee Newton
Park because of the carnival.
So, next weekend will be all
about the Independence Day
party.
An early Happy Fourth of
July to you, the customers,
who make our market hearty,
happy, and healthy. Thank
you for coming down to sup
port our local endeavors.
