Uniting the world in faith
Local Jehovah s Witnesses joining
virtual event stretching across globe
Breaking a century-old
tradition, the largest con
vention organization in the
world has moved its annual
in-person event to a virtual
format for the second time
in as many years, canceling
nearly 6,000 conventions
in 240 lands.
For dozens of years,
Pickens County members
of Jehovah’s Witnesses
have joined with other
members from Georgia and
surrounding states and ven
tured to Rome, College
Park, downtown Atlanta
and other locations;
streaming into the city to
take over hotels and fill
restaurants as they held
their conventions at local
venues. In 2020, the pan
demic unexpectedly inter
rupted that tradition
moving the international
religious organization to
cancel in-person conven
tions throughout the world
and launch a global virtual
event. This was a first for
Jehovah’s Witnesses, who
have held public conven
tions in stadiums, arenas,
convention centers, and
theaters around the world
since 1897. Most recently
in 2019, an International
Convention was held at the
new Mercedes Benz sta
dium with representatives
from over 35 countries.
“Powerful by Faith!” is
the theme of the 2021 global
event, which will be deliv
ered in more than 500 lan
guages to households
throughout the globe over
six weekends during July
and August 2021, uniting
some 15-20 million people
in 240 countries. Since the
convention is typically held
from Friday through Sun
day, the program will be
available in six installments
corresponding to morning
and afternoon sessions. “Fri
day” morning’s session will
be available for streaming or
download beginning June
28.
Local Pickens County
resident, Joe Langston, was
an attendee of the 2019 In
ternational Convention at
Mercedes Benz stadium and
describes his experience as,
“a unity of people, from lit
erally all around the Earth,
coming together for several
days in peace and harmony.”

Outbursts of Rage
Point to a Spiritual
Problem
By Rev. Tony Elder
Every time we turn
around it seems like
we’re hearing about an
other incident of road
rage, air rage, or a person
reacting with an outburst
of anger in some other
setting. Our society is
searching for an explana
tion for the increasing
number of these disturb
ing and often violent oc
currences. Some point to
guns as being the prob
lem. Others suggest that
it’s the result of all the
stress people are feeling
in relation to the pan
demic. May I offer an
other possibility? Could it
be that this is part of what
a world looks like when
we remove God from our
lives? This is how fallen
human beings tend to
react when they’re not
under the restraints of the
Holy Spirit. When people
aren’t yielding to the
Lord and cultivating His
holy characteristics in
their lives, they will fall
more and more under the
sway of Satan and their
ungodly, baser instincts.
Maybe the guns are the
chosen instruments some
people use. Maybe the
pressures and fears from
the pandemic intensify
people’s poor reactions.
However, the root of the

Loving Kindness
“Dearfriends, let us love one
another, for love comes from
God. Everyone who loves
has been born of God and
knows God. Whoever does
not love does not know God,
because God is love. ”
1 John 4:7-8 NIV
L oving Kindness is a concept and a
practice that is shared by most if not all
the world’s religions. In Buddhism, for
instance, the concept of “metta” denotes loving
kindness, compassion, or even friendliness and
good will. A typical metta meditation might
start with the words “may I be happy, may I be
well, may I be comfortable, and may I be at
peace.’’This prayer for well-being begins with
oneself, and then extends to loved ones,
acquaintances, enemies, and finally, to all
sentient beings. When Jesus tells his followers
in the fifth chapter of Matthew “You have
heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and
hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your
enemies and pray for those who persecute you,”
he is distilling loving kindness down to its
essence. That is, we are to love and care for all
sentient beings, not just the small circle of those
who love us. Jesus’s command to love your
neighbor as yourself has its roots in the Hebrew
Bible, where we are instructed “Do not seek
revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among
your people, but love your neighbor as yourself.”
(Leviticus 19:18 NIV) The most frequently
used word in the Koran is “compassionate,”
with every chapter (except the ninth) beginning
with the words “In the name of God (Allah),
the Compassionate (al-Rahman), the Merciful
(al-Rahim).’’The Koran is virtually an extended
commentary on the loving kindness and mercy
of God, which is a core tenet of Islam. Perhaps
the best summary of this is in the first episde of
John, where we are told to love one another, for
love is of God, and God is love.
