prob
lem is our turning away from
the loving and holy God who
can purify our hearts and
help us to treat others in the
right way.
Sometimes I don’t think we
realize what a positive influ
ence the church and follow
ers of Jesus have had on our
society. When they are func
tioning properly, they are
truly a light in the darkness
and the salt of the earth that
purifies and preserves its sur
roundings. So as less people
fit that description and as
those who do are marginal
ized by our culture, is it any
wonder that we are reaping
the results of their waning in
fluence?
The Bible lists some of the
Christlike qualities that
spring forth from our lives as
a result of the Holy Spirit’s
presence and power at work
(see Galatians 5:22-23). I be
lieve we’re witnessing a rise
in the opposite of those char
acteristics referred to as the
fruit of the Spirit. Instead of
love, there is more selfish-

ness and hatred. Rather than
joy, we’re seeing more anger
and fear. Rather than peace,
there is conflict and chaos.
Instead of people being long-
suffering, we’re finding more
individuals having short
fuses and lacking patience
with the shortcomings of
those around them. Kindness
is growing more rare, while a
lack of courtesy and respect
becomes more common.
Goodness is disappearing
from our society, being re
placed by various shades of
evil, crudeness, and selfish
motivations. Faithfulness is
waning, while instability and
unpredictability in people
abound. Gentleness has
given way to a spirit of
harshness. And self-control
seems to be exhibited less
and less, not only in a society
that indulges in all its pleas
ures, but one in which people
fail to restrain themselves
from lashing out at others.
Many of the incidents we
noted earlier are the result of
people failing to exercise
proper self-control when fac
ing some irritation, conflict,
or challenge.

However, the move has not
curbed the enthusiasm for the
annual event. Congregations

the public to join them in this
historic occasion.
“Faith has helped our
global brotherhood to con

millions gather in private
homes around the world to

Spirit is what the Bible refers
to as “the works of the flesh”
(see Galatians 5:19-21). In
cluded under that heading are
such things as hatred, out
bursts of wrath, and murders,
the very qualities and behav
iors we’re seeing on the rise
today.
Our choices have conse
quences. If we continue
down the road of rebellion
against God and His Word,
we will keep seeing godli
ness decrease and the unre
strained passions of sinful
humanity manifest them
selves more and more. Laws
and vaccines won’t resolve
the issue. People need a
change of heart and our soci
ety needs the influence of
those who follow Christ. We
need to turn back to God and
submit to Him.

husband, friend - it spills into
everything, even the people I
train. My mentor, Jay, lives in
Texas and I know Saturday
morning I have to send him
pictures of me so it takes dis
cipline and is a very mental
sport. You have to develop
mental toughness and you
learn to block some negative
people out.
Do you find that people
have preconceived notions
about bodybuilding?
Yes, they see the vanity of
it but don’t see the six to 10
hours of training each week.
It’s six hours of cardio, the
trips to the chiropractor, mas
sages for muscle recovery,
the mindset, the meal plan
ning, cooking and weighing
food, posing practice, getting
sleep and rest and still work
ing a full-time job. They fail
to see the work ethic and
what it does for you as a per
son. It is one of the most un
derrated sports there is and
it’s like any athletics - you
have to be dedicated. It is
consistency every day. If I
were to go and eat a cheese
burger it would set me back
two or three days.
What was it like to coach
other bodybuilders for
competition?
It was a big accomplish
ment, as if I had been on the
stage. There were times
watching them when you got
cold chills knowing you were
able to help them achieve
their goals and knowing they
could not have gotten there
without me.
How did SMC Powerhouse
Gym come about?
This has always been a
dream of mine and I wanted
to prove I could do it. We
spent 12 to 18 months col
lecting equipment and it is all
older and used by colleges,
government agencies,
YMCAs. Our goal was to use
this as a ministry and people
can come here without feel
ing intimidated. We wanted
to be different with an old-
school feel and camaraderie.
I know everyone is not going
to do what I do, but I want
everyone to come in and feel
as safe and welcome as I do
whether they are power-
lifters, bodybuilders, moms,
grandparents, or teens.
What is it like to be a part
of your gym?
Just because it is old-
school doesn’t mean it’s a
man’s gym - we have a mix
ture of men and women who
come and we just started a
boot camp. I’ve watched
drug addicts who’ve given
their lives to God. I’ve
helped a woman who took
three days to pull up to the
gym - she has lost about 50
pounds by coming. Jeff Bur
nett, one of my competitors,
lost 80 pounds. I’m the only
gym in town that allows
teenagers to come for $15 a
month as long as they are in
high school. We did a six
week program with 12 teens
and every Sunday one of us
would share our story. We
were able to tell them we’re
not perfect, we’ve made mis
takes and how working out
helped us figure things out.
What is it like working with
teenagers at the gym?
We have teenagers who
love to come in and work out.
I found my confidence in the
gym. I was never an athletic
kid and I found my home in
the weight room. This gives
me an opportunity to be a
role model and show them
you can be a man and still
love God and give back. It
creates opportunities for con
versation.
How did your SMC cloth
ing line come about?
That was actually some
thing I did before all of this.
When I was a kid I had a
cousin who worked out in a
gym like this and most of the
people working out there
were blue collar workers. I
was this scrawny kid and
they were big guys who
worked so hard. Without a
strong father figure in my life
I thought, “that’s the kind of
dad I want to be.” The shirts
are based on Proverbs
27:17:As iron sharpens iron,
so one person sharpens an
other. They are to honor men
and women who get up and
do what has to be done.
What is something you do
to relax?
We spend time with our
horses. We have three: We
ston, an American Quarter
Horse; Stella Bay, a regis
tered Paint Horse; and Luna
Reign, a registered American
Quarter Horse.
Do you have a guilty pleas
ure?
When I’m not in prep I
like to go out and listen to
local artists who play because
they love music. I’m a big
music fan and I love listening
to that raw talent. I like find
ing those gems of artists who
may never make it but love
playing music.
What is something people
may not know about you?
I wrote a song for local
music artist Jacob Bryant
called Good Man Goes to
Hell. It was on his first re
lease. I am a very good writer
when I take the time to slow
down.
