Unique west end rainbow inspires awe on social media

This photo of an unusual,
low-lying rainbow in west
Pickens County sparked a lit
tle magic on social media,
where it was shared widely
and garnered thousands of
likes and comments.
The photo was taken by
Pickens Junior High School
teacher Dawn Kelley around
5 p.m. on Sunday, June 27 off
Long Road looking east over
Jerusalem Church Road. The
top of West End General
Store can be seen, with famil
iar mountains in the back
ground.
Kelley researched the un
usual optic phenomenon and
said she believed it to be a
type of halo called a circum-
horizon arc. According to
TreeHugger.com, a circum-
horizon arc or "fire rain
bows" as they are sometimes
called, “are essentially ice-
halos formed by the refrac
tion of sunlight or,
occasionally, moonlight, in
plate-shaped ice crystals sus
pended in the atmosphere.
They are most commonly
spotted in cimis or cirrostra-
tus clouds, and they can be
easily distinguished from 22-
degree halos depending on
the distance they appear
below the sun or moon —
twice the distance of the
22s.”
Another source said they
are most common in summer
when the sun is high.
Kelley posted the photo to
a local Facebookpage, “Pho
tos of Pickens County Geor
gia.” It was liked over 930
times, and shared over 300
times. Atlanta-based meteor
ologist Glenn Bums even
shared the photo on his page,
and it racked up 2,800 likes
and nearly 350 shares.
This inspiring photograph was taken last weekend in west Pickens County.

PruittHealth - Jasper awarded Nursing Care Center accreditation
PruittHealth - Jasper has
earned The Joint Commission’s
Gold Seal of Approval® for
Nursing Care Center Accredita
tion by demonstrating continu
ous compliance with its
performance standards. The
Gold Seal is a symbol of quality
that reflects a health care orga
nization’s commitment to pro
viding safe and quality patient
care.
“This accreditation is just
one way in which PruittHealth -
Jasper has proven their commit
ment to an ongoing and concen
trated focus on patient-centered
care,” Neil L. Pruitt, Jr., chair
man and CEO of PruittHealth,
said. “We’ve gone to great
lengths to ensure quality of care
is ingrained in our culture.
Everyone who works at
PruittHealth is Committed to
Caring and this commitment
means we strive to provide safe,
quality care that patients de
serve and expect.”
To earn this distinction,
PruittHealth - Jasper underwent
a rigorous, onsite review. Dur
ing the visit, a team of Joint
Commission reviewers evalu
ated compliance with Nursing
Care Center standards spanning
several areas including, but not
limited to, environment of care,
infection prevention and con
trol, medication management,
and rights and responsibilities of
the individual.
The Joint Commission’s
standards are developed in con
sultation with health care ex
perts and providers,
measurement experts and pa
tients. They are informed by sci
entific literature and expert
consensus to help health care or
ganizations measure, assess and
improve performance. The sur
veyors also conducted onsite
observations and interviews.
“As a private accreditor, The
Joint Commission surveys
health care organizations to pro
tect the public by identifying de
ficiencies in care and working
with those organizations to cor
rect them as quickly and sus
tainably as possible,” says Mark
Pelletier, RN, MS, chief operat
ing officer, Accreditation and
Certification Operations, and
chief nursing executive, The
Joint Commission. “We com
mend PruittHealth for its contin
uous quality improvement
efforts in patient safety and
quality of care.”
