Work search requirements about to
kick in for unemployed Georgians
By Dave Williams
Bureau Chief
Capitol Beat News Service
ATLANTA - Starting July
4, unemployed Georgians
will have to submit evidence
they’re looking for work to
the state Department of
Labor.
Reinstatement of the work
search requirement comes as
Georgia ends its participation
in the various pandemic-re
lated federal unemployment
insurance programs Congress
has passed during the last 15
months.
Claimants who live in
Georgia must register with
EmployGeorgia, the state’s
reemployment website, and
include their social security
number.
Under state law, unem
ployed Georgians can only
receive unemployment bene
fits during weeks they ac
tively seek work. They must
submit a minimum of three
new job contacts each week,
which must be employers
they have not previously con
tacted.
“Work search and regis
tration with EmployGeorgia
is part of the reemployment
process,” state Commissioner
of Labor Mark Butler said
Thursday. “Unemployment
insurance payments serve as
a financial support for
claimants, but the real sup
port comes from the connec
tion of job seekers with open
positions."
The cutoff of federal un
employment benefits in
Georgia has been looming
since Gov. Brian Kemp an
nounced in May the state
would stop participating in
the federal programs effec
tive June 26. Other Republi
can-led states have taken a
similar step in recent weeks
as cases of COVID-19 have
declined and businesses have
reopened.
Labor advocates and De
mocrats have opposed the
cutoff as premature in light of
the ongoing difficulties peo
ple wishing to return to the
workforce have encountered
finding child care and amid
continuing concerns over the
virus in Georgia, where the
vaccination rate is lagging
the national average.
The number of Georgians
filing initial unemployment
claims saw little change last
week, increasing by 51 over
the previous week to 20,749.
The state has processed
more than 4.9 million jobless
claims since March of last
year, more than during the
last decade before the pan
demic, and paid out almost
$22.7 billion in state and fed
eral unemployment benefits
during those months.
The labor department has
more than 223,000 jobs listed
on EmployGeorgia.

Family Matters: Learning to take responsibility
By Mary Migliaro

When asked what traits
parents would like their chil
dren to have now and as
adults, one of the most com
mon responses is “to be re
sponsible.”
This is a broad term which
means many different things,
including: being dependable
so people know they can
count on you, keeping one’s
word and agreements, meet
ing one’s commitments, and
being a contributing member
of one’s family, community
and society.
Being responsible is a key
to children’s success both in
school and in the larger world
when they grow up.
Over time, most parents
want children to accept own
ership for a task or chore -
the children do it because it
needs to be done and accept
that it is their obligation to do
it. Over time, they may even
initiate doing a task “because
it needs to be done” - not be
cause they are being told to
do it. This attitude would be
called responsibility.
"Ingraining responsibility
in children is not a trick but
is simply teaching them life
skills," says Dr. Karen
Ruskin, Psy.D., author of
"The 9 Key Techniques for
Raising Respectful Children
Who Make Responsible
Choices." "Kids who do not
have responsibilities feel en
titled and think the world will
always do for them."
Teaching responsibility is
not a fixed event but a
process over time and it

should begin early. Giving
younger children simple
tasks to complete is a way to
begin to help them feel a
sense of accomplishment. As
these techniques continue, a
child gains more self-esteem
and fosters a desire to con
tinue to please their parents.
Be sure to model the be
havior in completing the task.
Children will see and better
understand how the task
should be completed. Over
time, children will develop a
sense of ownership for any
repeated action. Allowing a
child to “do it his way” will
encourage a feeling of pride
in accomplishment and foster
a sense of responsibility.
It is important for parents
to abandon their desire for
tasks to be completed per
fectly. Your child may not
finish a task in the timeframe
you would like or in the man
ner you would want but the
important point to remember
is that they complete it.
When you ask a 5-year-old to
make her bed, it may still be
lopsided. Don't criticize her.
Instead, recognize a job well
done. The next time you
make your own bed, show
her how you do it.
Give praise for the job
done first and add any other
suggestions for improvement
sparingly. As the child con
tinues to perform that task on
multiple occasions, their
technique will improve as
well. Praise is the most im
portant motivator for chil
dren.
Avoid rewards, at least at
first. There's a time and place
for rewards and allowances,
but experts agree that being
responsible isn't it. Save re
wards for tasks that go above
and beyond what you expect
to be your child's normal
household responsibilities.
Learning to take care of
his things also helps a child
develop a sense of responsi
bility for his actions. To get
your son to clean up after an
art project, inform him that
he won't be able to play with
his crayons and scissors until
the next day if he leaves a
messy table. Then you need
to follow through and take
away his supplies if he shirks
his responsibility. The more
you enforce the rides, the
more likely he is to clean up
without being asked, or at
least without whining about it
too much. Consistency is key.
Raising responsible kids
won’t happen overnight but if
you are consistent in guiding
them, they will become the
responsible adults you hope
for.
