The Bent Tree Foundation's annual golf tourna
ment, known as the Bent Tree Foundation Golf
Challenge, was held on June 30th this year. The
event was a tremendous success with 10 teams
participating.
The leaders of the groups took action! An ap
peal for donations in support of Pickens County
student scholarships and teacher grants was made;
and the following groups answered the call with
$8,835 donated! The generosity of our golfing
community is truly overwhelming!
There were 7 groups that participated in this
fundraising event: the BTLGA 18 Holers, the
Purdy Group, Steve Crain’s CAD Home Design
Group, the Sunday Golf and Grins Group; the Ten
Dollar Bunch, the Four Aces Poker Group and
Biddle’s Buddies Group.
The Bent Tree Foundation is extremely grateful
to all who took the challenge and donated. We
could not ask to be in a more wonderful and gen
erous community!

My largest is 51-pound Redfish. Bass anglers looking
for a new chase should give the reliable redfish a shot.

[O’Neill’s column appears

Are you a Bass guy? Bet
you are. I am too. Ever
caught a 51-pounder or, for
that matter, many or any over
10 pounds? Very few folks
have.
I’ve been promoting a
new horizon for the Bass an
gler. What’s that new hori
zon? Inshore Saltwater.
Permit me to circle around
a single ‘finny’ critter, the
magnificent Redfish, and
point you to two places
where you can get it done
and with whom.

July 11th:
On this day in 1914, Babe
Ruth, who became known as
“The Sultan of Swat” for his
home ran hitting ability,
made his major league debut
as the starting pitcher for the
Boston Red Sox. Ruth gave
up eight hits but lasted seven
innings while leading
Boston to a 4-3 win over the
Cleveland Naps.
July 12th:
On this day in 1966, St.
Louis’ sweltering Busch Sta
dium was the site for the All-
Star game. The temperature
reached 103 degrees and the
punishing heat took its toll
on both sides. Each team
managed a single run
through nine innings and the
contest went into extras. LA
Dodgers shortstop, Maury
Wills, drove in Cardinals
catcher, Tim McCarver, on a
walk-off single in the bottom
of the 10th. Wills’ heroics
sent the National League out
as 2-1 victors. Baltimore
Orioles shortstop, Brooks
Robinson, who went three
for four while scoring the
American League’s only
ran, became the first player
from a losing team to win
the All-Star MVP award.
July 13th:
On this day in 1963,
Cleveland Indians pitcher,
Early Wynn, reached the
3 00-win milestone for his
career, which came in the
second game of a double-
header with the Kansas City
Athletics. The 43-year-old
got beat up for six hits and
four runs through five in
nings but received plenty of
offensive support during
Cleveland’s 7-4 victory.
Wynn became a member of
the Baseball Hall of Fame in
1972.
July 14th:
On this day in 1953, the
20th major league All-Star
game took place at Cincin
nati’s Crosley Field, where
the National League de
feated the American League,
5-1. Every NL run came
unanswered, including a pair
of RBIs by Brooklyn
Dodgers shortstop, Pee Wee
Reese, on a single and dou
ble. Milwaukee Braves
pitcher, Warren Spahn, re
ceived credit for the win by
allowing zero hits over two
scoreless innings.
July 15th:
On this day in 1975, the
National League put to
gether a 6-3 win in the All-
Star game, which was held
at Milwaukee’s County Sta
dium. With the score tied
going into the ninth,
Chicago Cubs third base-
man, Bill Madlock, drove in
two on a single. Cincinnati
Reds outfielder, Pete Rose,
added another run on a sac-
fly. In the first All-Star game
to feature co-MVPs, Mad
lock and New York Mets
pitcher, Jon Matlack, shared
the honor. Matlack surren
dered two hits while collect
ing four strikeouts over two
shutout innings.

Crossroads
On Saturday evening,
Atlanta outfielder
Ronald Acuna Jr. suf
fered a season ending
knee injury during the
Braves 5-4 victory over
Miami and on Monday,
the team announced that
starting pitcher Ian An
derson was experiencing
some shoulder discom
fort and would receive
medical tests on Tues
day. Add these ailments
to the already injury
plagued roster, and this
franchise stands at a
crossroads.
It appears that 2021 is
a wash for the Braves,
but could this hobbled
squad actually reach the
postseason?
That prospect looks
impossible to me, more
over, if miraculously At
lanta won the NL East, it
simply is not talented
enough to beat any of the
top teams in a playoff se
ries. Sadly, fans must
face that really.
On the other hand,
this misfortune provides
ownership the opportu
nity to show fans it’s true
colors.
With so many valu
able weapons lost,
should management
even consider trades to
bolster the roster because
Atlanta stands in second
place at only four games
behind to Mets?
Any substantial
moves could prove to
fans that Liberty Media
wants to win. It might
only be a symbolic ges
ture, but to a fan base
lacking any confidence
in ownership, it would
buy some goodwill.
The team has several
expiring contracts, there
fore the most practical
option could be to be
come sellers before the
trade deadline on July
30. Those pending free
agents include Charlie
Morton, Drew Smyly,
Travis d’Arnaud, Ender
Inciarte, Josh Tomlin,
Pablo Sandoval, Jesse
Chavez, Johnathon Lu-
croy, Abraham Almonte,
and more.
All-star first baseman
and face of the franchise
Freddie Freeman is on
that list as well. Perhaps,
his status had slipped
your mind.
There’s a ton of trade
value in that group for
well funded teams in
hotly contested pennant
races. Despite a slow
start to this season, Free
man is hot at the mo
ment. His season
average is up to .274
while over the past 30
games, it stands at .375
with a .591 slugging per
centage and ops of
1.035.
Surely the Braves
would not let Freeman
walk in free agency or
trade him now, or would
they?
Why hasn’t a long
term deal already been
