To the Editor:
Now that the dust has set
tled and the smoke from the
fireworks has cleared, The
Jasper Lions Club wants to
take the opportunity to say
“thank you” to our commu
nity for their support and par
ticipation in this year’s
Independence Day festivities.
The Jasper Lions Club has
hosted the celebration for
over 80 years (with few ex
ceptions, such as WWII and
COVID), and we attempt to
provide a few days of enter
tainment here in our little
town, including a parade,
rides, bingo, musical enter
tainment and fireworks.
Thank you to everyone
who participated in the pa
rade, and who performed on
stage on Saturday. Thank you
to the Roman Festival Brass
for bringing their annual
“God & Country” concert
outside, and thanks to High
Ridge Band for taking us up
to the fireworks.
Big thanks goes to the city
of Jasper, Mayor Steve
Lawrence, City Manager
Brandon Douglas, Deputy
Clerk Tara Benson, Adam
Howard, as well as Major
Matt Dawkins from Jasper
PD, and the Jasper FD for all
their help with planning and
implementation.
The city of Jasper crews
were so helpful to us in dec
orating the stage in town and
emptying trash cans in the
park so we did not have over
flows. Thank you to United
Community Bank and other
businesses who contributed
bingo prizes and bought ads.
We appreciate all who bought
raffle tickets and enjoyed the
rides.
A big thanks to the
Progress for their coverage
and great pictures from the
celebration.
All of the 4th of July pro
ceeds go to fund Lions Club
projects such as Fill A Stock
ing which provides Christ
mas presents for around 700
Pickens County children
every year. It funds eye
exams, surgeries and glasses
through the Georgia Lions
Lighthouse. The health fair
provides low cost medical
services and free high school
athletic physicals. All these
and more are funded by the
Independence Day Celebra
tion. We thank you so much
for your patronage.
The Jasper Lions Club
meets on the 2nd and 4th
Thursdays of each month at
Walker Hall at the First Bap
tist Church of Jasper. For
more information, call 706-
253-LION (5466) or email us
at georgialions@mac.com.

To the Editor:
Right in the middle of
Jasper, is one of the biggest
examples of what happens
when people stop caring. Our
city park, aka the duck pond,
is an embarrassment. If
someone visited here for the
first time, I would be
ashamed to take them there.
As a community, we should
all be ashamed of the de
plorable shape that this once
beautiful little spot has fallen
into. I have lived here for
over 20 years, and today was
my last ever visit to the park,
unless something major is
done to right this wrong.
Everywhere you look, it is
completely sad what is hap
pening to our first mountain
city, and the city park is just
about the biggest disgrace of
them all. Years ago, I consid
ered the duck pond a little
piece of paradise. Now it
closely resembles a cess
pool. This is exactly what
happens when people are
past the point of caring. I beg
of somebody somewhere to
step up and take charge of
this situation, before we lose
another of the few treasures
we have left here, that haven't
already been taken away
from us.

To the Editor:
I am a blind citizen of
Jasper. My wife passed away
on June 24. She had done her
banking for many years at a
local bank in town. She had
several automatic withdraws
which were drafted from her
account on a regular basis.
So, on June 28, we, my fam
ily and I, called the bank to
freeze her bank accounts in
order to stop these drafts. The
accounts were frozen and we
were told that we would need
to bring in a copy of the death
certificate, when we received
it, in order to complete the
process of closing the ac
counts.
On June 28, she had ap
proximately $15 in her sav
ings account. So, we returned
on July 9, after receiving the
death certificates, to com
plete the process. At this time
there was only $ 10 in the sav
ings account. When we asked
what happened to the other
$5, we were informed that
the bank withdrew a $5 serv
ice charge on June 30, al
though the bank had frozen
the accounts from all with
draws on June 28. The bank
refused to reverse the service

charge even though the ac
count was frozen on June 28.
If this is the way this bank
treats its customers I think
the citizens of Jasper should
know about it. It is obvious
that this bank felt that it
needed the $5 much more
than a blind person that had
just lost his wife.
Even though no with
draws should have been con
ducted after June 28, of
course, except for banking
charges, which are obviously
exempt from the freeze, how
disgusting.
Be careful who you bank
with, this could happen to
you and perhaps for much
larger charges. After all, it’s
about the principle not the
amount of money involved.
Sincerely,
Rick Tucker
To the Editor:
Progressive Socialism
Karl Marx, the wack job
that invented the idea of
Communism in 1850 and
who abandoned his own chil
dren, claimed to be "scien
tific" in all his writings. He
wanted a great revolution that
would remake his world. His
idea is repackaged today in
side of Critical Race Theory.
Democrats just love it.
He was the guy who said
that the definition of commu
nism was when the govern
ment owned all the means of
production everyone would
get an equal cut of free stuff.
Today there is a new way
of having the same thing as
communism and at the same
time avoiding the ugly name
associated with massive mur
ders. That new way is Pro
gressive Socialism.
It now is trying to hide it
self under the cloak of Criti
cal Race Theory which
asserts that the USA is built
upon the evil of racism and
therefore must be destroyed.
Once our republic is de
stroyed, Progressive Social
ism grounded in Critical
Race Theory will replace it.
Progressive Socialism
gets the same job done as
communism. It just does it
without outright legal owner
ship. It controls every aspect
of your life through the en
forcement of thousands of
rules about how you can use
that which you own. The
government does not have to
own it to control it.
All Congress has to do is
write regulations about
everything, get the courts to
nod yes and they send out the
regulators. The regulators
call the shots.
Think about your life and
what you own. Between the
federal regulators, the state
regulators, the counties and
the cities, how much freedom
do you have to use that which
you own? If you run a busi
ness think about how much
time you spend satisfying
some complicated rides.
We are dangerously close
to the final chapter of pure
communism. We have sent
too many people sympathetic
to this idea to every level of
government around us. Karl
Marx would be smiling in joy
if the fire is not too hot.
Vote for any candidate
that is not a Democrat Pro
gressive Socialist. And Pre
pare.
