face value, most times, there is
a much deeper meaning to them.
Such is the case with the verses
that I have shared.
Before we dig into the meat
of God’s Word concerning spir
itual persecution, allow me to
bring you into the story. If you
are a Christian, do you feel at
times that you are persecuted for
your testimony and faith in
Jesus? There are so many rea
sons why Christians can be sin
gled out in the workplace or at
school, but the root is spiritual.
Jesus teaches us in the gospels
that we’re in this world, but
we’re not of it. Consequently,
people will view us and our
faith as different or strange. It is
our spiritual differences that
make us a target of people’s ig
norance of God that can cause
them to reject us. Once a person
is rejected by another person or
a group, those who are rejected
can be made to feel like “out
siders."
Do you ever feel like you’re
on trial when you’re around
those who do not believe in
Christ? Does it seem that you
have to “prove yourself’ to oth
ers who do not share your faith
view? Do others exclude you
from their social gatherings?
If we fail to recognize these
signs as spiritual persecution,
we may over time begin to take
negative actions against us, per
sonally. Now, we can dig into
the meaning of today’s verses.
As you read the verses, you will
notice that Jesus asked Saul why
he was persecuting Him.
Nowhere in the verses I’ve
shared does Jesus mention the
believers that Saul killed or im
prisoned. Why did the Lord ask
Saul the question in this matter
since he was coming against the
believers in Jerusalem? Our
Lord is proving to us that the
battle does indeed belong to
Him and not us. The world
doesn’t hate us; it hates the One
in which we have placed our
faith in order to save us.
When we know that the battle
belongs to the Lord and not us,
we will have more faith to trust
God to fight for us. The enemy
can pull us into his schemes
when we allow battles to be
come personal. The persecution
is against the Lord, not us. Be
still when you’re persecuted and
allow the Lord to defend you
against the enemy.

Dragons dominate Panthers
The PAT after was good and
the score was 28-0, it would
remain here through the rest
of the quarter.
Starting the second quar
ter the Dragons were flying
high and having fun. The
sideline was full of excite
ment. Halfway through the
second quarter Streicher
threw his third TD pass of the
game, this time on a beautiful
comer route to Devin Hand
for a 13 yard TD. The PAT
after was good making the
score 35-0.
Pickens received the ball
back from Union with just
under two minutes to play
and went into their two
minute drill. Unfortunately,
on the 3rd play of the drive
Streicher was picked off
around mid-field and the ball
was returned to the Dragons
20. Unfortunately, there was
also a personal foul on the
play that moved the ball in
side the 10. The Panthers
threw a TD on the first play
of the series where a Pickens
DB slipped and left the WR
wide open. The PAT after
was good and the halftime
score would be 35-7.
Pickens came out in the
third quarter looking to estab
lish the running game and
drive the football. They re
ceived the second half kick
off and took the ball down
the field into the red zone,
finishing up with a short 5
yard TD ran by Hand. The
PAT after was good and the
score was now 42-7. The
drive took over 8 minutes off
the clock. The defense went
out and forced a Union punt
that sailed over Colby
Brooks’ head and backed the
Dragons up inside their 10.
Fortunately, Brooks was able
to bail the Dragons out with
a 57 yard ran on a sweep just
before the quarter ended. The
35 point lead going into the
fourth quarter resulted in a
running clock for the Drag
ons.
After a beautiful screen
pass to Brooks that went for
a 30 yard TD was called
back, Streicher scrambled for
18 yards and into field goal
range. Kicker Jose Sanchez
nailed a 43 yard field goal
that would have been good
from at least another 10 yards
further back, adding to the
Dragons lead and making the
game 45-7. This would be the
final score of the game.
The Dragons had over 400
yards of offense-192 rushing
and 213 passing. The Pan
thers on the other hand had
under 50 total yards, -13
rushing and 61 passing. This
was dominant performance
by the Dragons in all three
phases of the game.
Pickens has a bye this
week before starting region
play up next week at home
against reigning region
champion Cedartown. Go
Dragons.

This week in sports history

September 19-September 25
September 19th:
On this day in 1982, the New Orleans
Saints earned their first road shutout in fran
chise history, which was a 10-0 win over the
Chicago Bears at Soldier Field. The game’s
lone touchdown came on a 10-yard pass
from Saints quarterback, Ken Stabler, to
tight end, Larry Hardy. New Orleans’ de
fense notched five sacks and three intercep
tions while limiting Walter Payton to 20
yards on eight carries. Payton had just 62
yards from scrimmage while Chicago was
held to 13 first downs and 183 total yards.
September 20th:
On this day in 1908, Chicago White Sox
pitcher, Frank Smith, became the first hurler
to toss two no-hitters for the franchise. Three
years after throwing his first, Smith dupli
cated the feat by allowing one baseranner in
29 batters faced. He also recorded a pair of
strikeouts as Chicago blanked the Philadel
phia Athletics, 1-0. Smith was the last White
Sox pitcher to have two no-noes’ until Mark
Buehrle over a century later.
September 21st:
On this day in 1934, the Dean brothers,
Dizzy and Paul, started and contributed to
the St. Louis Cardinals’ doubleheader sweep
of the Brooklyn Dodgers. Dizzy started the
first contest and responded with a complete-
game shutout, tallying seven strikeouts while
giving up only three hits and four baseran-
ners. He also went two for five from the plate
and scored once during the Cards’ 13-0 rout.
Game two saw Paul surrender one baseran
ner and strike out six batters on his way to a
no-hitter. He even went two for three with a
ran scored as St. Louis won that meeting, 3-
0.
September 22nd:
On this day in 1969, San Francisco Giants
center fielder, Willie Mays, hit the 600th
home ran of his major league career. The Say
Hey Kid tagged San Diego Padres starter,
Mike Corkins, for a two-run shot in the top
of the seventh. His blast also broke a dead
lock and catapulted the Giants to a 4-2 win.
Mays retired in 1973 with 660 homers, a
total that ranks sixth on the all-time list.
September 23rd:
On this day in 1979, Cardinals left fielder,
Lou Brock, stole the 938th and final base of
his major league career. He also added a sin
gle and scored a ran as St. Louis downed the
New York Mets, 7-4. Brock retired as base
ball’s all-time leader for steals and held that
claim until Rickey Henderson eclipsed his
mark in 1991.
September 24th:
On this day in 1920, Babe Ruth became
major league baseball’s very first 50-home
run man. The New York Yankees slugger
went deep for a two-out blast in the bottom
of the first. Unfortunately, this was New
York’s only ran in a 3-1 loss to the Washing
ton Senators. Ruth completed the 1920 sea
son with 54 homers, which was the first of
four 50-home ran campaigns he would have
for his career.
September 25th:
On this day in 1956, Brooklyn Dodgers
pitcher, Sal Maglie, no-hit the Philadelphia
Phillies. Maglie faced 29 batters and allowed
two baserunners in what was the final no-hit
ter for the Dodgers during the franchise’s
stay in Brooklyn. The Dodgers blanked the
Phils, 5-0, and this was also the last no-no
for the club until Sandy Koufax threw the
first of his career in 1962.

Gartrell on college football
but not all, questions an
swered over the next two
weekends of football. This
week’s slate is underwhelm
ing, but there are still a few
significant football games.
Twelfth ranked ND trav
els to Wisconsin (18th). Are
the Irish an apparition or a
solid team? If the answer is
not clear after this week,
their game with #8 Cincin
nati a week later should tell
us a lot.
LSU faces Mississippi
State on the road. This ball-
game has no bearing on na
tional prominence, but
without a solid performance,
the hot seat awaits both head
coach Mike Leach and espe
cially, Ed Orgeron.
Number 7 Texas A&M
plays at 16th ranked
Arkansas, so the winner ab
solutely jumps into the con
versation in the SEC West.
Unranked Nebraska faces
number 20 Michigan State.
Number 4 Oklahoma hosts a
solid unranked team in West
Virginia, and after a narrow
win over unremarkable Ne
braska, are the Sooners vul
nerable?
The clouded field of con
ference and playoff con
tenders makes this season a
delicious buffet for fans. Col
lege football is suddenly
more competitive than in
many years. I continue to
maintain that only a handful
of programs can win the na
tional crown, three of my
original choices remain un
beaten. Early losses removed
the luster from a few others,
but early losses are easily
forgettable if the team rolls to
a conference championship
thereafter.
Let’s enjoy the action
along the way.
