Pink Out game honors cancer survivors
The Pickens Softball program holds a special
game each year to honor those in our lives who
have been stricken with cancer. This year the hon-
oree was Mrs. Joanne Walker.
Joanne’s cancer journey began in May 2021
with routine mammogram testing. Breast cancer
has been in her family, so Joanne was concerned.
For the next couple of months, there were more
images, biopsies, and the results.
From the beginning she kept her faith and re
membered who was in control. Joanne decided to
have surgery. With the mastectomy, they got clear
margins and now she is cancer free. The road to
recovery has thrown a few curveballs. An addi
tional surgery was required just a week ago.
Joanne is grateful to God and “her village” for her
cancer survival.
The Nettes would like to thank everyone who
bought a Pink Out T-shirt. Thank you, Mrs.
Walker, for your example of strength and courage.
It was a blessing and a pleasure to honor Mrs.
Walker as The Nettes’ 2021 Pink Out Honoree.
Let’s continue to search for a cure for all cancers
and strengthen those who have been stricken.

enough, ” Walker said of being chosen as the Pink Out honoree. “I am thankfulfor all of you, thank
ful for a praying community. ”

their next opponent and first region
game, the Cedartown Bulldogs.
The Dragons worked hard throughout
the week while on fall break to get ahead
and get ready to take on the reigning re
gion champs.
The game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
this Friday, October 1st and will be
played at Dragon Stadium. The team will
need a packed house and everyone to
show up and show their Pickens Dragons
Pride.
Go Dragons.

Being Tough

Ok, so you are a tough

Good for you, you are prob

Down To
The Wire
On Friday of this week,
the calendar rolls to Octo
ber which means playoff
baseball. With only a few
days left in this regular
season, some of the divi
sion races remain up for
grabs, therefore the NL
East, NL West and the
Wildcards appear headed
right down to the wire.
The final week is a de
licious example of com
petitive baseball and
October excitement for
the serious fans of the
game.
The Braves (83-72)
hold a two and a half
game advantage over
Philadelphia (81-75) in
the East, and with a three
game, head-to-head, home
series pending this week,
Atlanta could seal the di
vision on Thursday by
sweeping the Phillies.
Thereafter, Philly plays
lowly Miami (64-90). At
lanta hosts a weekend se
ries against the Mets
(73-82).
In the West, San Fran
cisco (102-54) clings to a
two game advantage over
the Dodgers (100-56). The
Giants host Arizona (50-
106) and San Diego (78-
78) to close the season,
while LA plays the Padres
and a final three game bill
at home with the NL Cen
tral champion Brewers
(94-62).
The NL Wildcards will
certainly be the second
place finisher in the West
and Central runner-up St.
Louis (87-69). The NL
Wildcard game is sched
uled for next Wednesday,
October 6th with the two
Division Series openers
on Friday, October 8th.
Atlanta and Philadel
phia’s only shot at the
postseason is to win the
Eastern Division!
The American League
playoff picture is more
certain but no less excit
ing. Tampa Bay (97-59),
the White Sox (89-68)
clinched their divisions
and Houston (91-65)
holds and commanding
five game lead in the AL
West. The Wildcard field
remains hotly contested
though with the Yankees
(89-67), Boston (88-68),
Toronto (87-69), Seattle
(86-70), and Oakland (85-
71) still viable contenders.
AL Wildcard games are
slated for Tuesday, Octo
ber 5th and the ALDS
open on Thursday, Octo
ber 7th.
One interesting point
which might add some
drama for the Braves is
the potential of a makeup
game with Colorado “if
needed.” The game at Tru-
ist Park on September
16th was postponed due to
weather and is resched
uled for October 4th but
only if the outcome of that
game is necessary to de
termine the NL East win
ner.
There’s also a remote
yet real possibility that At
lanta and Philadelphia
might need a winner take
all playoff game to deter
mine the division cham
pion on October 5th.
