Youths of Month named
at Boys & Girls Club
Alex Applegate
The Boys & Girls Club of
Pickens County would like to
congratulate Alex Applegate
and Jett Davison for being
named as the Youth of the
Month for September 2021.
Both of these leaders have
shown impressive interper
sonal skills and have been
positive role models during
their time at the Club.
Alex Applegate, a 6th
grader at Jasper Middle
School, has been a club
member for two years now.
He has always been sociable
and has been a role model to
others by helping new mem
bers to feel included and
comfortable at the club. He
regularly goes out of his way
to ensure others are having
fun and feeling like they be
long. Alex’s future plans in
clude working with the Boys
& Girls Clubs and eventually
becoming a teacher. We be
lieve his kind heart and con
sistent motivation will serve
him well in these endeavors.
We can’t wait to see the pos-
Jett Davison
itive impact that Alex has on
our community.
Jett Davison is a 3rd
grader that attends Harmony
Elementary and has been a
club member for two years.
Jett has always been kind and
respectful of others and has
been a great role model for
others during her time at the
Boys & Girls Club. Jett en
joys playing pool and spend
ing time with her friends
while at the club, and her par
ents enjoy her being there as
well. “Our family is thrilled
this community has such a
wonderful summer and after-
school program for the kids.
Jett has made such great
friends with the kids and
staff,” said the Davison's.
When she is not at the club,
Jett enjoys riding horses and
playing her guitar. Her future
plans include owning a horse
ranch. We are proud to have
Jett as a part of our club, and
we are excited to see all that
she accomplishes.

Going to Georgia
I remember being set up
on the bed while someone
dressed me. We were going
to Georgia to stay with Mama
Waldroup. After a while, we
were all loaded in the car.
Mama and Dad sat in the
front seat. I sat between them
and Mama held John. In the
back there was Jim, Tom,
Don and Sue. Now, Sue got
car sick (which probably ac
counts for her not liking to
ride now). I can remember
the sign that said “Maryville
City Limits.” Mama always
packed a big lunch but we
couldn’t eat until we passed
that sign (I’m sure I have
heard that told just as a joke.)
We crossed the river on a
ferry. Dad wouldn’t let us out
of the car but it was still fun.
It took a long time to get to
Georgia. Sue always got sick
coming around the river but
it wasn’t too much longer ‘til
we got to Georgia and Mama
Waldroup’s. Dad would start
blowing the horn and the
Waldroups would all be out
in the yard ready to give us
hugs and kisses.
We slept on pallets or
whatever. I always wanted to
sleep with Mary on the pallet.
A rooster crowing would
wake me up and I would be
so excited, wanting to go
look for eggs.
It was revival so we went
to church two times a day.
Mama would let us sit with
the other kids but we knew
we had better stay in line. If
we got noisy she would say,
“Little lady, I will take care
of you when we get home.”
Or, “I’ll write your name
down in my little red book.”
But we knew that meant trou
ble.
We had a cousin and she
was beautiful. Blonde hair,
blue eyes, a beautiful smile
and just a beauty and the
boys all liked her. One of the
boys’ daddy sold Watkins
products, which included
perfume, and he would sneak
those out and give her.
We would walk to the
spring. Mama didn’t know
that, but the boys would give
us perfume and small little
things but we never got in
trouble because we hurried
back to church. I always
loved that cousin and still do.
It was a big thing to walk to
the spring with the group of
young folks.
By Sunday everyone was
worn out. We had a picture
made as we were getting
ready to leave. John or I one
was always pouting or cry
ing. The Waldroups would
stand in the yard and wave
until we were out of sight.
We now laugh at how we bet
how it really was. They prob
ably went in and laid down
the rest of the day and said,
“Thank goodness they won’t
be back for many months.”
