Last Tuesday was a spe
cial day at the Pickens
County Community Thrift
Store. People were lined up
at the door waiting for the
doors to open at 10 a.m. That
in itself was not that unusual.
But Tuesday was the first day
of the new Shabby Chic Bou
tique to be open for business.
Once the doors were un
locked, folks headed straight
to the back comer of the store
where treasures of unusual
beauty, design & collectables
were awaiting them.
The boutique idea started
about six weeks ago, when
store president Terry “Sarge”
Bishop approached one of
the floor managers, Edith
Portillo, with a crazy idea
about doing something extra
special with the really nice
stuff that was being donated.
“I loved the idea. It con
sumed me. Everything I’ve
done these last few weeks
has been about how to make
it great. My sleeping, eating,
talking... everything in my
brain has been about this”,
she said with a huge smile.
Her efforts paid off. Folks
were inside the posh interior
even before the ribbon could
be cut to officially open the
high end boutique. In the first
week, the tiny comer brim
ming with beautiful and
unique finds netted 10 per
cent of total sales of the store.
Considering the fact that it

definitely is on the road to
success.
Portillo is no new comer
to running a boutique. With
years of experience in mar
keting, she has gone to count
less estate sales for ideas and
pricing tips. Her flare for de
sign and color goes back to
her former years as a semi
professional ballroom dancer
and musical theater. “I love
the staging. In a small space,
you have to be very creative
in how you display every
thing. No space is wasted,”
she said. That glamorous
style is just part of who she
is. You see it in her personal
ity and the clothes she wears
every day.
Items in the boutique
aren’t all sold as is. Many
have been transformed by
Portillo with a fresh coat of
paint or repurposing of some
thing normal into extraordi
nary. “I knew things were
going to sell...people like
pretty things. I was nervous
a little about how it would go
over at first. Even though
everything in the boutique is
high end, it’s still part of a
thrift store. I’m thrilled at
how things are going,” she
said while watching her dis
plays come apart as items
were placed in shopping
carts.
Not to worry though if
you haven’t yet seen the new
comer of the store. The in
ventory will change but the
style and beauty will always
be constant. Shabby Chic is a
newcomer that is here to stay.
Be sure and check it out the
next time you shop at the
store... you’ll be glad you
did.
