Need new
adventures?
{O’Neill’s column appears
twice monthly in the
Progress, generally on the
first and third weeks of the
month.}
For a vacation or a road trip, great fishing abounds
in all directions.
1. Rodman Reservoir,
Northeast Florida, at only
9,500 acres is legendary for
the number of trophy bass it
has produced over the years
ever since it was created in
1968. It is consistently
ranked with the state of
Florida as one of the top ten
best bass lakes in the coun
try. So, what’s it like?
You’ll be fishing floating
cover, 'dollar weeds and
pads' and water hyacinths
here where bass set up
housekeeping.
There’s plenty of eel
grass, hydrilla and lily pads
so tackle up with heavy gear,
get some live bait, 9 or even
12-inch plastics and count
on exercising some patience.
The Rodman Lake record
Largemouth Bass is 17.2 lbs.
2. Lake Guntersville,
Northeast Alabama on the
Tennessee River. 69,000
acres and, again, plenty of
vegetation along the shore
line that sets up the entire
food chain with Bass at the
top for our purposes.
When you get a map, it’ll
just look like a wide place in
the river, but don’t be dis
couraged. It’s not a river
and the waters are very fer
tile from the dam to the
upper reaches of the lake.
One of the most attractive
things about Guntersville is
that you won’t see anyone
else fishing. It’s all yours
but not so remote as to be in
convenient for the family.
Alabama State Parks is an
excellent host for incomings.
3. Lake Seminole, deep
Southwest Georgia and
Southeast Alabama at the
confluence of the Chatta
hoochee and Flint Rivers
and Spring Creek. I first bass
fished Seminole in 1966. It
was good then, has been and
is.
Don’t fool around with
the lower end of the lake.
Stay in the creeks and rivers
where there’s current.
What you’ll notice is that
the timber wasn’t cut and so
an entire forest is just below
the surface and holds giant
schools of bait and bass. Jim
Woodruff Dam backs up
37,000 acres of fertile wa
ters. Georgia State Park
is on Spring Creek with
large well equipped cabin, a
convenient ramp and you
can pull your boat almost up
to the cabin along the bank.
Give Seminole a visit.
Hire a guide for a couple of
days and you’ll be all set.
4. Toledo Bend Reser
voir on the Texas-
Louisiana state line. The
dam is in Newton County
approximately 24 miles
northeast of Jasper. At
181,600 acres, it’s substan
tial for sure.
Habitat in Toledo Bend
Reservoir consists of aquatic
vegetation, standing timber,
and flooded terrestrial vege
tation. Hydrilla is the pre
dominant plant species,
although many native plants
(coontail, eelgrass,
pondweed, lily pads) are
also present. In the lower
part of the reservoir the
water is typically clear;
gamefish are usually found
around vegetation edges,
flats, humps, and creek
channels. In the upper third
of the reservoir, the abun
dance of vegetation typically
declines.
Timber, brush, laydowns,
and creek channels provide
upper-lake gamefish habitat.
At periods of high water, ter
restrial bushes and trees pro
vide excellent habitat
reservoir-wide.
Man-made fish attractors
provide additional structure.
5. OK, one more
Texas lake then I’m gonna
quit. Lake Fork. It’s a great
destination for the Bass fish
erman. It’s heavily managed
as described below with a
slot limit, a very conserva
tive limit for keepers and
that has resulted in it pro
ducing the most record
largemouths in Texas and
that’s saying something.
Lake Fork is located 65
miles east of Dallas on Lake
Fork Creek, a major tribu
tary of the Sabine River. At
27,690 acres and 315 miles
of shoreline, Lake Fork is
one of the 10 largest lakes in
Texas.
Lake Fork is an excellent
vacation destination and
being so close to Dallas and
Fort Worth it is heavily
fished. Give it a try.
6. Pickwick Lake at Wil
son Dam. Sorry, I said I
was going to quit but just
can’t leave this one out. The
upper reaches of Pickwick
Lake reach all the way up
river to Wilson Dam. I
fished there with Brian Bar
ton from brianbartonout-
doors.com. You should too.
In November, we caught
Largemouths, Smallmouths,
Stripers, White Bass, Black
Drum and Channel and Blue
Cats on every cast. Listen
now, every cast produced a
hook up, a break off or a
miss or a very respectable
gamefish. Sizes? We’re
talking 6-pound Smallies, 8-
pound Largemouths, 20-
pound Stripers and 30 pound
Blues. We’ve shot two tele
vision shows there and each
took no more than 3-hours.
Now that’s production.
Anyway, Pickwick is all part
of the Tennessee River sys
tem, is fertile, packed with
bait and gamefish. The only
time I’ve fished with Brian
has been in the Fall so can’t
comment on other times of
the year but, if you can,
please do telephone Brian
and book a few days in the
Fall on Pickwick up the river
at the base of Wilson Dam.

to Pickens County for more
than 13 years. In addition to

and resources for their ingre
dients and materials, they
also make an effort to reduce
their environmental impact in
many other ways.

postable to-go containers.
•They use reusable con
tainers in their kitchen for
food storage rather than sin
gle-use to reduce waste.
•Glass, plastic, cardboard,
and metal are recycled.
•Food scraps are com

farm animals.
•Used vegetable oil is re
