Jasper UMC wants your kids
Kristie McCormick, KOK leader, works with
2nd and 3rd graders as they study God & Me.

Oh to be a kid again - no worries, no fears. Oh
wait that’s not exactly how it is with kids today.
They do experience the same fears and worry we
face daily in the midst of the continuing Covid
pandemic. Perhaps not at the same level, but they
too are affected by the shut downs, the masks, the
tests...
Jasper United Methodist Church wants to help
kids be kids again. The Kids of the Kingdom is
open to all children ages 3 through 5th grade meets
every Wednesday afternoon at the church located
at 85 West Church Street from 4 to 5:45 p.m. KOK
is open to all children of the community - mem
bership is not required. Their time together is filled
with fun, laughter, song and worship as they learn
more about God’s love.
Kelly Wisniewski, Christian education director
of JUMC, encourages all parents to bring their
children to participate.
“We started KOK this year in August. The num
ber of kids coming have been really down due to
Covid. It’s a fun safe place for them to join with
friends. We really do want your kids to be here,”
she said with a smile.
Their time starts together with recess and snack
time before they go to music led by music director
Roxanne Golden and Tricia Gallagher. It’s not just

Jasper-based ministry serving
refugee community
Mike Mendonca from Holy Spirit Ranch Ministeries
mans the grill in Brannon Hills serving refugees Saturday.
Saturday ministers from
the Holy Spirit Ranch Min
istries, based in Jasper,
cooked chicken for about 60
members of the refugee com
munity in the Brannon Hills
area of Clarkston, GA. This
area is home to large number
of Somali, Kenyan, Afghani
and other refugees from
around the world.
Holy Spirit pastor Joe
Betts said members of their
ministry have scaled back but
remained active however
possible during the COVID
period. “As soon as things
open up, you’ll see us out
there.”
Betts said with the refugee
community, HSR believes it
is a great chance to reach
people that the Lord has led
them to. “We didn’t pick and
choose,” he said. “We feel we
were led there.”
They provide food, cloth
ing and conversation, getting
to know people there without
aggressively pushing any
thing. “It’s called ‘Mission of
Love,”’ said Betts. At first it
was hard to find anyone on
the streets but more people
are recognizing them and
seemed to enjoy the barbecue
Saturday, Betts said.
Holy Spirit is planning a
mission trip to the Pine Ridge
Reservation in North Dakota
this November. Holy Spirit
also plans a coat drive later
this year in Pickens County.

How Do We
Pray without
Ceasing?
By Rev.
Tony Elder
If you’re
reading this,
you proba
bly believe
in and prac
tice prayer to some extent.
Maybe you even have a
specific time set aside each
day for such communication
with God. I heard another
minister recently preach a
message on our need to find
a place and a time when we
can read God’s Word and
pray. He mentioned one man
he knew who got out on his
porch in his rocking chair
every morning for that pur
pose. After he started practic
ing that regular, quiet time
with the Lord, it changed this
man’s life.
However, the Bible goes
further than simply advocat
ing prayer as an activity we
practice at a set time on a
daily basis or even several
times throughout the course
of our day. It instructs fol
lowers of Christ to “pray
without ceasing” (I Thessa
lonians 5:17). How do we
fulfill that divine expecta
tion? Most of us can’t sit in
that rocking chair all day.
And even if we could, I
don’t believe that’s what the
Lord is wanting us to do. We
have work to do, family re
sponsibilities, kids or grand-
kids to watch, household
chores to do, and errands to

Changing Others by
Changing Yourself
| “Fathers, do not exasperate your
children; instead, bring them up
in the training and instruction
of the Lord. ”
Ephesians 6:4 NIV
T here are a series of books by
the author Kevin Leman which
purport to tell us how to
rapidly change someone. I have been
reading “Have a New Teenager by
Friday” because I have a teenage
stepdaughter who I wish behaved
better. Though I was initially
skeptical of the idea that we could
change her within the week, what I
soon realized was that the thrust of
the book is about changing how I
react to her. Instead of launching
into a long-winded lecture which
your teenager will tune out after five
or ten seconds, why not wait until
they want a favor from you and then
simply tell them they cannot do or
have the requested thing if they are
going to treat others disrespectfully.
Rather than insist on them being
home more often, why not make your
home somewhere that your kids
enjoy hanging out at. In short, the
advice is about changing you and
your response to your children rather
than trying to force them to change.
Your children will naturally change
in response to your change. In my
case, I have noticed that when I start
out by raising my voice and insisting
my stepdaughter change something
she is doing, there is firm resistance.
On the other hand, if I calmly ask her
to please turn down her music or
clean up a mess she has made, she
usually responds positively. And of
course, it helps to have clear rules
and to follow them consistently.
