Construction on a large
Georgia Department of
Transportation project that
will bring two new round
abouts and widen areas along
Highway 136 between the
Highway 136 Connector and
Highway 515 is over the
halfway mark, according to
the state agency.
This project includes re
placing the existing intersec
tion at Highway 136 and
Highway 136 Connector with
a roundabout. The intersec
tion of Highway 136 and El
lijay Road will be realigned
and also include a new
roundabout.
The shoulders on both
sides of 136 throughout the
project, except at the round
abouts, will be widened 10
feet with a 6.5-foot paved
width to accommodate bicy
clists.

nector will retain four 12-foot
travel lanes and the existing
shoulder width.
Construction began in
September of 2020, and ac
cording to GDOT District 6

to be complete in early 2022.
“We’re working on com
pleting the eastern round
about,” he said. “We hope to
open the roundabout and
shift traffic to it by the end of
the month, weather permit
ting.”

Pickens County and the Municipalities of Jasper
and Talking Rock have prepared an amendment to
add a Broadband Element to the Pickens County,
Georgia 2018 Joint Comprehensive Plan. The draft
Broadband Element was prepared according to
the 2018 Minimum Planning Standards set by the
Georgia Department of Community Affairs and the
Georgia Planning Act of 1989. The draft Broadband
Element includes an Action Plan comprised of a
narrative and map of unserved areas, goals,
needs/opportunities and Community Work Program
items.
Accordingly, a joint public hearing is scheduled
for Pickens County and Municipalities to accept
comments on the Comprehensive Plan Amend
ment. After the public hearing and receipt of public
comment, the draft amendment will be transmitted
for review by the Northwest Georgia Regional Com
mission and the Georgia Department of Community
Affairs.
The public hearing on the draft amendment will
be held on Thursday, October 21, 2021 immedi
ately following the Board of Commissioners Work
Session which begins at 4:30 PM at the Pickens
County Administrative Building, 1266 East Church
Street, Jasper, Georgia, in the Commission
Conference Room - Suite 168.

fundraiser in person this year
on Thursday evening, Oct.
21, at the college’s North
Metro Campus.
“Tickets are going fast,
but there’s still time to pur
chase one of the remaining
tickets or to become a spon
sor,” said Vice President of
Advancement Jennifer Nel
son. “We’re very excited to
be back in person for the Re
verse Raffle this year. It
promises to be a fun event
filled with lots of great en
ergy to support a great
cause!”
The Reverse Raffle was
held online in 2020 due to the
pandemic, but still raised
over $50,000 to help students
in need. With a goal this year
of raising $60,000, the 2021
Reverse Raffle features a

chance for ticket holders to

Unlike a traditional Raffle,
the last ticket drawn will be
announced as the grand prize

tickets, autographed items,
jewelry, and artwork.

much-needed funding to de
serving students for scholar

pact of the pandemic, unex
pected financial hardships

tinuing their education,” said

them stay enrolled through
graduation at a time when the
local workforce needs them
more than ever.”
