Letters to t/m Editor w
To the Editor:
This is an open letter to
every developer out there
who may be reading. Let me
get right to the point. Go
away. You are not wanted
here. You used up and ruined
Woodstock. You destroyed
and mined Canton. Since
nothing is left there for you
to get your hands on, no her
itage left for you to bulldoze
over without a single care,
now you are looking to Pick
ens County with your greed.
You will not invade our first
mountain city, and destroy
it. I have been here for 20
years, and have enjoyed
every minute of not being
subjected to people like you.
Citizens of Pickens, are you
going to stand and fight
these evil people? Or do you
want to live in Cherokee
County north? I say we
stand and fight! They can
not, and will not, take our
way of life from us.
Gene Abernathy
To the Editor:
To prevent further spread
of the coronaviras, we
should require everyone to
get folly vaccinated (includ
ing a possible third dose)—
unless exempted by a
sincerely held religious be
lief or medical condition.
We should write to our leg
islators and executives at all
levels of government.
Alvin Blake

To the Editor:
This is a photo from a recent high school football practice.
I took a photo of them after they finished practice. They
prayed, and the coach read some Bible verses. This is amaz
ing, and shows how great our county really is. My son plays
football for the 2nd grade team here in Pickens and I really
enjoyed that. Courtney Gilstrap
To the Editor:
In this buzzy, upside-down pandemic world, I have sought
public health information from sources that speak clearly to
our community.
I want to thank EMS Chief Sloan Elrod, School Health
Chief Gail Smith, and Public Health Nurse Manager Tiffany
Morgan for providing clear, straight-from-the-heart advice
about how best to handle staying safe in this dicey situation.
Their vaccine advocacy has led Jasper to be a beacon in the
north Georgia area.
When I now look at the GA DPH vaccine interactive dash
board, Jasper is an oasis of deep purple, where 71.64% of the
eligible population is folly vaccinated, and 77.51% has had
at least one vaccine. Numbers of vaccinated people have been
gently trending up as I have checked https://experience.ar-
Cgis.com/experience/3d8eea39f5cl443dbl743a4cb8948a9e
about weekly. Pale portions of the county are growing more
vivid lavender; Jasper shines brightest.
While I hope these leaders experience professional grati
fication in seeing the fruits of their labor, let’s all give them
credit for steadfast courage in the face adversity, both from
the grief this virus has caused and the public’s doubts and de
nials. I am so glad they are with us, grounded in care for our
community. Follow them; their aim is true! Ignore the rest of
the static. Ellen Harrison
Baked goods, potatoes and
mushrooms at the Market
By Heather Giambra
A beautiful day for the
market and the lot was very
full with 60 tents of talent.
An amazing variety of baked
goods, crafts, art, decor, po
tatoes, okra and more. You
can certainly find something
special to dress up the porch,
yard, deck, or home for the
different holidays. Upcycled
Soda Can Artwork is brought
by Connie Smith aka Con
nie’s Creations. She has an
amazing variety of orna
ments for Christmas trees,
plus a few other creations
like earrings that won’t
weigh your ears down.
You sure couldn’t miss
Joseph and Lee Ann Daniel’s
home grown Shiitake mush
rooms. This was their first
venture to sell at our market.
They grow mushrooms and
are licensed to forage for
mushrooms as well, but only
sell the home grown Shi
itakes. So many delicious
ideas come to mind.. ..yum.
And then there were four.
A talented family fills our
market with their specialties.
Bridgett Morgan is the proud
Mama of her talented daugh
ters, Anna, Keeley, and
Eileen, each of whom bring
their creations to sell. Anna
does art including paintings.
Keeley does framed photog
raphy, and sweet Ilene brings
the sweets; baked goods and
delicious cookies. With her
apron and sincere smile
you’re sure to get the best
tasting goody from her! And
Mama Morgan? She drives
the talented trio, not only by
car, but with encouragement.
Kenneth Kirk still has
sweet potatoes for baking,
boiling, or your crock pot, it’s
so easy. Steve and Becky
Alexander have garlic for
your delicious dinners. They
also bring jalapeno jellies and
nutritious microgreens. Look
for our other produce
providers to keep your fridge
full.

like to be planted now to get
the best start for next year.

Senator Chuck Payne
praises law enforcement
following ride along
By Chuck Payne
State Senator
GA-SD 54
Saturday night, 6 p.m.
until 3 a.m. and into the wee-
hours of Sunday morning, as
Ex-Officio of the Georgia
State Senate Public Safety
Committee, I was honored to
join with the Georgia State
Patrol and the Georgia De
partment of Public Safety to
ride along with Crime Sup
pression Team Leader, Ser
geant Scott Tarpley #943, of
the Georgia State Patrol in
Atlanta.
As the politics of Atlanta
have permitted complete and
utter lawlessness throughout
the city, as the Atlanta Police
are kept from confronting
the criminal element there,
Governor Brian Kemp had
committed Georgia’s Public
Safety organizations to step
in to confront those who
subvert the law and with
such reckless abandon. I was
able to see it first hand and
up close.
I wish to thank GSP’s
Captain Ritchie Howard and
Lieutenant Shane Allen for
allowing me the opportunity
to join in. Throughout the
night, the Crime Suppres
sion Team of 7 Public Safety
officials made 64 vehicle
stops, charged 3 with reck
less driving, issued 45 cita
tions and 54 warnings,
arrested 3 wanted felons, re
covered 2 firearms and took
part in 3 high speed pursuits
before the night was done.
Believe it or not, this was a
relatively slow night for
them.
One of the pursuits of en
gagement was of four vehi
cles driving in excess of 140
mph through Atlanta, as it
was none stop throughout
the night with one call after
another, yet, I was impressed
in such competence of the
most professional law en
forcement agencies of our
state and our nation. It was
made apparent to me
throughout the night that
keeping citizens safe was
their ONLY ambition in
doing what they do... as they
do day in, and day out. This
is reflected in the number of
simple warnings these gave
throughout the night.
We need always be
thankful for our local Law
Enforcement and Public
Safety Officers, and for
those Public Safety Agencies
who always go above and
beyond in their selfless serv
ice to our Communities and
our State, and as such Keep
ers of the Peace and the Law.
After a single night in At
lanta, I can tell you first
hand that there are no greater
professionals that those of
the Georgia State Patrol.
HERE TODAY.
HERE TOMORROW.
Community Bank of Pickens County

opened in 2008. We are locally owned and
